St Kilda has announced the signing of former North Melbourne forward Mason Wood for the 2021 AFL season.

The 27-year-old has been training with the Saints at RSEA Park since mid-January, after being delisted by the Kangaroos at the end of the 2020 campaign.

Wood has been added to the St Kilda squad as part of the pre-season Supplemental Selection Period, with Saints head of list management James Gallagher pleased to add the 192cm attacker to the team.

"Once the dust had settled post-draft, we identified that adding depth to our forward line was something that was probably the priority, if the right person were available," Gallagher said to saints.com.au.

"We invited Mason to training about three weeks ago, and in the short time he’s been here, he’s gelled really nicely with our group, impressed all with his attitude and performances at training, and he shows a real determination to have another crack at senior level.

"We’re really happy to be able to offer him a position on our list."

Wood was selected by North Melbourne with pick 41 in the 2012 National Draft but only played 65 games in seven seasons - kicking 76 goals - before the club decided not to offer him another contract.

The Geelong Falcons product had a breakout season for the Kangaroos in 2018, kicking 22 goals in 13 games, but was unable to build on that form as he continually struggled with injuries.

Wood will wear number 32 at the Saints, with the jersey being vacant last season after Paddy McCartin stepped away from the game with concussion issues.

The former Roo joins a swag of experienced players to join the Saints, including Brad Crouch, Jack Higgins, Shaun McKernan and James Frawley.

With the prodigious Max King in the goal square, Tim Membrey roaming across centre half forward and Rowan Marshall resting forward of the ball, Wood faces a battle to earn a best 22 position at the Saints along with McKernan - who was recruited as a free agent after being delisted by Essendon.

St Kilda will begin their 2021 AFL season with a trip to visit the GWS Giants on March 21.
