Former Catholic priest Charles Alfred Barnett given 14-month minimum home detention sentence for abusing three boys

A FORMER priest who snuck into a teenage boy’s bedroom to sexually assault him has been jailed — but will serve his 14-month minimum term on home detention.

On Friday, the District Court sentenced Charles Alfred Barnett to two years, four months, three weeks and four days’ jail for crimes against three boys committed 30 years ago.

Judge Jack Costello — who last month told Barnett he should apologise to his victims, not the court — imposed a 14-month non-parole period, to be served on home detention.

Barnett, 72, was arrested in Jakarta in February 2008, and extradited to Adelaide in February 2009.

In 2010, he was jailed for six years and six months for offending against four boys between 1977 and 1994.

The victims of those offences told the court Barnett was depraved, immoral, evil and “creepy, like a snake”.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to a second set of offending — the persistent sexual abuse of one boy, and indecents assaults upon two others.

Those crimes occurred over an eight-year period, and included Barnett sneaking in through one victim’s bedroom window to abuse him.
