Samsung Launches Bezel-Less, Notch-Less Galaxy Smartphone

This article is more than 5 years old.

After an iterative year, Samsung smartphones are about to get very interesting indeed. Not only is the folding Galaxy F coming very soon, but the company’s game-changing bezel-less, notch-less display tech looks to be ready for the Galaxy S10. The source? None other than Samsung itself…

Picked up by both Chinese site ITHome and perennial Samsung leaks champion Ice Universe, Samsung held an event this week in Asia for the ‘Galaxy A8s’ - a limited edition successor to its popular A8. And it features no bezels and no notch.

Instead, the Galaxy A8s has just a small hole drilled in the top of the display for its front-facing camera and screen protectors are already leaking. Tantalisingly, Ice Universe tweeted:

“[The] Galaxy A8s is just the beginning of Samsung's innovative technology next year.”

This makes sense. The Galaxy A8 range only comprises midrange smartphones and has never been the focus of Samsung’s cutting-edge tech. In fact, historically it receives designs similar to what Samsung used on its flagship phones the year before.

All of which strongly suggests Samsung has something even more minimal than a camera hole lined up for its 10th-anniversary Galaxy S10.

What could that be? Helpfully, leaks from a Samsung private event this week revealed it is working on Fingerprint on Display (FoD), Sound on Display (SoD) and Under Panel Sensors (UPS). UPS is the key here as it enables components such as the camera to be placed under the display.

What if this tech isn’t ready? In that case, it seems perfectly reasonable to expect the Galaxy S10 to match the design of the Galaxy S8s. Combine that with the smartphone’s leaked triple rear cameras, ’ultrasonic’ in-display reader, new gradient color schemes and 5G option and suddenly it makes sense that Samsung has already boasted about the Galaxy S10… twice.
