Korean pop supergroup BTS broke a YouTube record for the most viewed premiere on the platform’s history, with reportedly 3-4 million fans tuning in live to see their new music video for their first English single, “Dynamite” on Friday and can now claim another for the most views in the first 24 hours of a music debut.

KEY FACTS

“Dynamite” reportedly broke the record for the most concurrent viewers on a music video debut, beating out fellow Korean pop group Blackpink, who had 1.65 million viewers on their song debut “How You Like That” in June.

“How You Like That” also held the record for the most views on a music video in the first day of being posted on YouTube, with 86.3 million views, but was one-upped by “Dynamite” before the end of the day.

By Friday evening, the views on the “Dynamite” music video had soared to more than nearly 86.8 million on YouTube, which would mean it topped the list.

It’s the third time this year BTS has cracked the top 10 for first-day music video views, with their song “ON” seeing 43.8 million views in the first 24 hours, and enjoyed 1.54 million concurrent watchers when it was posted, along with another video to promote the song, “'ON' Kinetic Manifesto Film : Come Prima.

With “Dyanamite,” seven of the YouTube music videos in the top 10 for the most first-day views are by Korean artists, cementing the major role Korean pop music plays on YouTube and illustrating how dedicated their fans are.

Key background

It could pay off for artists to court YouTube streams. In January, Billboard began counting YouTube numbers into how it determines the ranking for the coveted spots on the Billboard 200 chart. YouTube is believed to be where most of the world listens to music, despite not billing itself as a music-first platform. However, it may not completely translate into music sales or Billboard rankings. While “How You Like That” was breaking records on YouTube, it peaked at the 33rd spot on the Billboard Hot 100. In comparison, “ON” peaked on the same chart at 4th.
