A hungover man has confessed to a crime despite having been too drunk to remember what the offence was.

Kieran Towan, 26, handed himself into officers at Rosebud station in Melbourne's south-east with a bag containing $107.50 and a set of keys, sensing he had done something wrong.

Police deducted that Towan had broken into the Nepean Historical Society, commonly known as Sorrento Museum, while he was drunk and on medication.

Dromana Magistrates' Court heard Towan had been drinking alcohol at his friend's wedding in Sorrento on February 13 last year.

While under the influence, he broke into the Melbourne Road museum where he stole cash and keys from a drawer, the Mornington Peninsula Leader reported.

The 26-year-old knocked down a door to escape, which set off a security alarm.

He returned to his friends after being separated from them and said he had done something wrong but could not remember the theft.

Police were surprised when Towan confessed to the crime the next morning after he had sobered up.

The Yarra Junction man was still charged with theft and was bailed.

He pleaded guilty the burglary and theft charges in court on Thursday.

Towan's defence lawyer said he became 'drunk and stupid' because he combined alcohol with prescription medication.

While Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge said he was impressed by Towan's confession, the 26-year-old should not be excused of his intoxication (pictured: Rosebud Police Station)

While Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge said he was impressed that Towan had confessed, he said the 26-year-old could not be excused due to intoxication.

Towan was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond and must donate $1,000 to the museum
