Saracens face inquiry after walk-off

Mon 25 Aug 2003 20.46 EDT

Saracens face an investigation by Twickenham after their friendly against Agen in France on Sunday evening was abandoned 15 minutes into the second half because the visitors' coach Rod Kafer deemed it too dangerous for his players to continue.

Their fly-half Andy Goode was sent off in the opening half and when their captain Simon Raiwalui was sent to the sin-bin after 55 minutes Kafer, who was in his first match in charge, ordered his players off with his team trailing 18-11.

Kafer was not available for comment last night but after the match he was reported as saying that it was "too dangerous" for Saracens to play on because of the fighting which had blighted the game throughout as well as a number of off-the-ball incidents.

Visiting supporters at the Stade Armandie blamed Agen for starting the fighting and said the referee struggled to keep control while Agen fans maintained that their prop Christian Califano, who spent last season with Saracens, had been targeted from the start.

The English club could face disciplinary action if the Rugby Football Union receives the referee's report from the French Rugby Federation.
