Social Scene: Silver Ball, Sushi Pizza and International Women’s Day
By Lucy Manly
On a balmy Wednesday evening in Surry Hills, Japanese fusion restaurant Sash opened its doors for a VIP cocktail party to make its presence known in Sydney. Since launching in Melbourne in 2017 the restaurant has become a foodie hotspot, famous for its sushi pizza and Japanese tacos.
Co-owners Dave Nelson and Kyle Stagol hosted actor and model Cameron Robbie, an array of Insta-famous blondes and too many reality stars at the Sydney opening. Dishes served included charcoal sticky pork bao and sake buttermilk nuggets, all washed down with Bacardi Tropical Mojito and Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz cocktails.
Silver Ball
Penny and Shane Moran opened up their iconic Darling Point mansion ‘Swifts’ on Thursday evening for the annual Silver Ball. A fundraising event for the Sydney Children’s Hospital, over 300 guests attended the $750 a head black-tie cocktail soiree. A record $1.1 million was raised.
Sydney socialites young and old let their hair down during the live auction. The wife of multi-billionaire tech entrepreneur Mike Cannon-Brookes, Annie dropped a pretty penny, pledging $20,000 to the Children's Hospital and paying $42,000 for a private dining experience with chef Guillaume Brahimi. Hamilton Island heiress Nicky Oatley showcased a new love interest, Sydney financier Jonathan Pearce, following the acrimonious split with her husband and yachtie Troy Tindill last year. Nadia Fairfax also debuted her new beau, Michael Wayne.
Other guests included Anthony Minichiello and Terry Biviano, Skye Leckie, Amber Symond, Hoda and Tom Waterhouse, Alyce and Caroline Tran and Deborah Symond O’Neil. With the Morans busy hosting the lavish event, one highlight of the evening was seeing a child believed to be a mini-Moran do a mad dash across the lawn barefoot to pick up their Ubereats delivery as guests mingled in their glam attire.
International Women’s Day
Sydney's corporate, sports and finance types gathered at the Establishment Ballroom in the CBD on Friday to celebrate International Women’s Day. Hosted by The Workplace Employment Lawyers with all profits being donated to Dress for Success, the ballroom was buzzing and the champagne donated by Bird in Hand was flowing.
Today 's Deborah Knight hosted the fascinating panel discussion with Dr Kerryn Phelps, Ann Sherry and Justin Greiner on everything from gender issues in the workplace, the impact of social media, pornography in today's society and the #metoo movement. Dr Keryn Phelps drew a standing ovation when declaring "If you believe in equality for women you are a feminist."
