West Bromwich Albion are bottom of the Premier League and at genuine risk of relegation, and questions are starting to be asked of their transfer chief.
West Bromwich Albion spent well over £40 million this summer, smashed their transfer record, but still find themselves four points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League.
So while many fans have been critical of the Baggies board for a perceived lack of investment, maybe it is not how much they have spent but who they have signed that is at the root of the problem.
On paper, however, most of the players brought to The Hawthorns by technical director Nick Hammond since the summer are more a hit than a miss.
Ahmed Hegazi and Kieran Gibbs have been inspired bargain buys at the back, Gareth Barry has added experience and class in central midfield while Jay Rodriguez (above) is starting to find the form that seemingly made him a shoo-in for England’s 2014 World Cup squad before those injuries struck.
But, on the other hand, the likes of Brendan Galloway, Hal Robson-Kanu, Allan Nyom and Marc Wilson simply are not good enough, while the loan addition of PSG’s Grzegorz Krychowiak (below) simply has not lived up to expectations.
And the less said about £15 million record signing Oliver Burke, who has started just one league game, the better.
So with the fear of relegation rising, a number of West Brom fans are starting to argue whether Hammond should pay with his job.
