MELBOURNE Cup favourite Hartnell has been handed a tricky barrier draw for Tuesday’s big race.

Hartnell received barrier 12 and while it’s not a disastrous draw, only two runners have ever won from the gate in 155 runnings of the famous race.

Second-favourite Oceanographer, fresh off a storming Lexus Stakes win on Saturday, will start next to Hartnell in gate 11, however history is on the Godolphin horse’s side. Barrier 11 has historically been the most successful, providing eight winners.

Third favourite and Caulfield Cup winner Jameka drew nicely in gate three. Godolphin‘s Beautiful Romance drew the inside gate while English raider Wicklow Brave unfortunately drew the outside barrier.
