ICAC releases suppressed evidence that Gladys Berejiklian's relationship with Daryl Maguire began in 2014

Disgraced former NSW Liberal MP Daryl Maguire has told a corruption inquiry his relationship with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian began in 2014, earlier than both had previously stated.

The evidence was given during a private Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) hearing on Thursday, part of which was released publicly by the commission on Friday following the conclusion of Mr Maguire's evidence.

On Monday, the Premier told the ICAC that the relationship began around the time of the NSW election, in March 2015.

During the private session, the counsel assisting the ICAC Scott Robertson asked Mr Maguire: "Whether it's at least possible that a close personal relationship, a close emotional attachment and close relationship between you and Ms Berejiklian may in fact have been on foot at some time prior to 2015?"

"Yes," Mr Maguire replied.

Robertson: "So doing the best you can, when do you think the relationship developed into something that could be fairly described as a close personal relationship as distinct from a friendship?"

Maguire: "Oh, I don't know that I could put a date on it. We, we were always good friends and slowly over time, the relationship developed. I, I couldn't tell you when it started."

Robertson: "Would it be fair to say that you were in a close personal relationship with Ms Berejiklian in calendar year 2014?

Maguire: "Yes."

Robertson: "What about 2013?"

Maguire: "Yes."

In another private session on Friday, Mr Maguire was questioned about his assertion the relationship began in 2013 and clarified that it had started "at some time" in 2014.

The corruption watchdog is investigating whether Mr Maguire, a former Wagga Wagga MP, used his position for financial gain.

ICAC to investigate transcript publication

A transcript of Mr Maguire's closed session evidence was published by mistake on the ICAC website on Thursday, but removed less than an hour later.

An investigation is underway into how the error occurred.

This morning Assistant Commissioner Ruth McColl apologised to the Premier and Mr Maguire for the transcript being "inadvertently" uploaded.

Ms Berejiklian's barrister, Arthur Moses SC, also asked ICAC to investigate who may have downloaded the transcript from the ICAC website in the period it was available online, describing it as a "violation" of the Premier's privacy and security.

Ms Berejiklian's judgment has come under intense scrutiny since she revealed the relationship while giving evidence to ICAC on Monday.

On Wednesday she survived two no-confidence motions in NSW Parliament.

The inquiry has heard a number of intercepts of phone calls between Mr Maguire and Ms Berejiklian in which he is heard telling her about his business dealings.

But Ms Berejiklian has maintained that she was never informed of the details and never became involved in his financial affairs.
