Elderly couple critically injured in Sydney beach crash

An elderly couple is fighting for life after their car crashed through a barrier and plunged 10 metres onto Maroubra Beach.

An elderly couple are in a critical condition after their car crashed through two fences, off a ledge and onto a usually crowded beach in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.

Emergency service were called to Maroubra Beach at about 2.30pm following reports a car had crashed through a barrier and dropped 10 metres onto the beach.

A man and woman, both aged in their late 70s, were inside the Mazda at the time of the accident.

An elderly woman was thrown from the vehicle and a man, believed to be her husband, was trapped for over an hour. (9news)

One witness told 9News it was lucky the beach was so quiet because of the wet weather.

A helicopter and 11 police and ambulance crews were on the scene.

"There's possible spinal injuries, head injuries and chest injuries," NSW Ambulance spokesperson Liam McDermott told 9News.

Both have been placed in an induced coma and remain in a critical condition.
