Police cracking down on NSW-Victorian border

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says that details of how NSW will check travellers who might have been to virus-hit parts of Melbourne are still being finalised.

Police are cracking down on Victorians crossing the New South Wales border.

The Murray River Police District is increasing their presence on the highway.

Superintendent Paul Smith says there is no intention to close the New South Wales and Victorian border.

"This is about getting the message out to people from those hotspots (in Victoria) do not travel to New South Wales," he said.

He says just because restrictions have eased in the state it doesn't mean people should be complacent.

"We seek community assistance and we'll certainly be trying to educate people," Mr Smith said.

Residents in the restricted coronavirus suburbs in Victoria could face an $11,000 fine or six months in jail if they decide to travel.
