Goya ‘Tunnel of Green’ to 

make way for road expansion 

The idyllic ‘Tunnel of Green’ in Okinawa 

City is going by the wayside. Literally! 

A 1,220 meter stretch of roadway starting at 

Goya Intersection is being expanded, and hundreds 

of trees are to be trimmed, then transplanted. 

The street, a continuation of Gate 2 Street 

along the Okinawa City Police Station and Koza 

Junior High School route, is being widened to 32 

meters, with a 2012 completion date envisioned. 

The Goya Area Residents Association says 

“this Kusunoki-dori is going to change our view 

of the area by 2012.” Nobuo Oshiro, the 

Association president, hopes to “keep this great 

street’s good memories, and continue to tell our 

grandchildren in the future, so we never forget” 

how beautiful it was. The Camphor Tree 

Avenue widening project is under auspices of

lead role in providing timely information 

to Navy and Marine Corps 

dependents on Okinawa. 

The MCCS Family Readiness Day 

Expo on Saturday draws dozens of 

families—from seasoned veterans of 

military moves to those new to the military 

community—for a day of interaction 

between them and the support 

agencies tasked with serving them. 

The Expo, an annual event, takes 

place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Camp 

Foster Field House. 

“The purpose of the Family 

Readiness Day Expo is to bring as 

many support organizations as possible 

into the same location to provide information 

to families of Marines & 

Sailors in a day of fun and entertainment,” 

says Karen Hanovich, Marine 

Corps Family Team Building 

(MCFTB) Program Manager, “This 

year, MCFTB is pulling out all the 


Nobel Prize winner stands by testimony 

Japanese military ordered mass suicides 

Kenzaburo Oe says “I believe 

there was an order from the 

military” to direct Okinawans 

to commit suicide during the 

Battle of Okinawa, rather than permit 

capture by American troops. 

Oe, a Nobel Prize winning novelist, 

was testifying in a lawsuit brought by a 

former senior Japanese military commander. 

The novelist told the Osaka 

District Court his three books detailing 

the 1945 Battle of Okinawa are accurate, 

and should be published. 

Yutaka Umezawa is asking the court 

to block the publications, insisting the 

Japanese Imperial Army did not order 

Okinawans to kill themselves. Umezawa 

was the Japanese Army commander on 

Zamami Island. He says Oe’s depictions 

of Japanese leaders on Tokashiki and 

Zamami Islands are wrong. Oe writes in 

his books that senior Japanese officers on 

both islands did order Okinawan civilians 

to commit suicide instead of surrendering 

to invading American troops. 

The 90-year-old Umezawa, then an 

Army captain commanding the Zamami 

garrison, says “No way, there was no 

order at all. I didn’t tell anyone to commit 

suicide.” He has testified We never 

gave anybody hand grenades, and I didn’t 

order my men to write that.” 

Oe, the 1994 Nobel Prize winner for 

literature, counters “It is not a question of 

whether there were written orders.” In a 

statement to the media before his testimony, 

Oe said “Mass suicides were 

forced on Okinawa islanders under 

Japan’s hierarchical social structure that 

ran through the state of Japan, the 

Japanese armed forces, and local garrisons.” 

Zamami Island survivors of the battle 

have repeatedly said “Yes, the suicides 

were ordered by Japanese military 

officials. Yes, Umezawa said ‘die with 

the hand grenades’”. Umezawa launched 

the suit against Oe and co-collaborator 

Iwanami Shoten, charging their descriptions 

of him in the three books make him 

appear to be inhumane. 

In one of his three books, Oe included 

an extract from his 1970 essay 

“Okinawa Notes”, in which he wrote the 

mass Okinawa suicides in March 1945 

came as a result of an order from the 

Japanese garrison. He described the 

wartime garrison commander as “a man 

remembered by Okinawa residents as

More than 70% of the trees along the 

affected route will have their branches 

shorn in the coming few days, a first step 

in the transplant process. Goya area residents 

staged a festival last Saturday, drawing 

attention to the beautiful trees that have 

been a part of the community’s heritage.

presented a picture exhibition, and Katsuo 

Kameshita, a tree doctor, joined street performers. 

Homeless admits setting 

fire to pachinko parlor 

Masakazu Fukage surrendered to 

Ginowan City Police, telling them he accidentally 

set an abandoned pachinko parlor 

ablaze November 9th. 

Police were surprised, but a check 

with the fire department proved the 58- 

year-old was telling the truth. A fire had 

broken out in the old pachinko parlor, and 

firefighters battled the blaze in the hall’s 

second floor warehouse before getting it 

under control after the and half hours. 

There was nobody in the building, nobody 

was injured, and fireman had no idea about 

what started the fire. 

Fukage, who flatly told police “I set 

the fire in the pachinko hall”, told police 

he’d been living in the building since July. 

He says he accidentally started the fire 

while using his lighter. The pachinko parlor, 

in the Oyama area of Ginowan City, 

has been closed for quite a while. 

Motorist complaining to 

p o l i c e gets himself arrested 

An angry motorist got far more than 

he bargained for after complaining to cops 

about someone’s car being on his parking 

spot. 

Okinawa City Police responded to the 

call, listening to the man describe a car 

parked in his space. The irate complainant 

took police in his own car to the spot where 

the illegally parked car was, and demanded 

action. Police took the information on the 

car, then realized they had a bigger problem 

on their hands. 

The agitated motorist was more than 

irritated. He’d been drinking, and police 

detected the odor as they sat in his car. A 

breathalyzer test was administered, and the 

man had a 0.47 reading. They arrested him 

on the spot for driving while intoxicated, 

advising the man the only 100 meters distance 

driven had no bearing on the law. 

The man, an Okinawa City employee 

in the civil engineering section, now faces 

the driving under influence charges. 

Rising flour import costs 

trigger bakery bread, 

noodle price hikes 

Okinawa’s largest bread bakers and 

noodle factories say they must raise product 

prices starting next month, in order to 

remain competitive. 

Gushiken bread factory in Uruma City 

says prices will go up by 6~10% because 

of another price increase for imported 

flour. Gushiken’s president, Toshimasa 

Inamine, and Okiko bread factory in 

Nishihara’s president, Tatsuo Nakada, say 

they’re seeing price increases after 17 years 

of holding steady. Both say they must 

increase prices to compensate. 

San Foods, a noodle maker based in 

Itoman City, is experiencing the same 

problem. President Kenichi Higo says 

“We have not raised prices in 30 years, but 

now we had to make an increase.” San 

Foods boosted prices ¥10~15 this month. 

Okiko breads will be ¥10~20 higher next 

month, increases of 8~10%. 

Bakers attribute the cost hikes for 

flour to the worldwide demand for biofuels 

made from corn, a demand that has 

seen many farmers switching from growing 

wheat to corn. The local companies say 

the higher prices will be seen in everything 

from soba noodles to cakes and sweet 

breads. 

Turtle hatched at Churaumi 

Aquarium grows during 

swim to northern Japan 

A red sea turtle hatched at northern 

Okinawa’s Churaumi Aquarium and 

released into the ocean July 8th has been 

caught by a fisherman in northern Japan. 

Although not pleased the sea turtle 

was caught, aquarium officials are pleased 

with details on how the turtle grew from 

16.7cm to 20.5cm in four months during 

his migration north. The turtle, which 

weighed 976 grams when released, 

weighed 1,700 grams when captured in 

Aomori Prefecture October 28th. 

Churaumi Aquarium officials say the 

red sea turtle typically travels 1- 

,000~2000km during a migration, and is 

capable of traveling to the U.S. west coast. 

They think this particular turtle was headed 

for America when he was caught. 

The Aomori Prefecture Aquarium has 

said it will keep the young turtle in its custody 

for protection until the ocean waters 

become warmer. Once the cold weather is 

finished, the turtle will be released into the 

wild to continue his travels. 

Okinawans are walking less, 

driving a whole lot more 

Okinawa Prefecture has confirmed 

what everyone driving the streets already 

knew. More people are driving their cars. 

A survey of 17 cities, towns and villages 

to determine personal transportation 

habits showed Okinawan people are simply 

not walking much, and the younger people 

are, the less they walk. The study was conducted 

among 66,000 people last October 

and November, with results announced this 

week in Naha City. 

Comparing survey results with 

research conducted in 1989, Prefecture 

officials found the number of cars on 

Okinawa streets and highways have 

increased 135%. More than 67% of 

respondents said they use their cars, even 

for the shortest of trips. Seventeen years 

ago, 45% of those surveyed said they used 

cars for routine travel. Linked to the 50% 

increase in automobile use was a strong 

decline in the number of people walking. 

In 1989, 32.7% of those surveyed said 

they walked. Now, only 20.5% say they 

walk while performing routine chores. 

Prefecture officials say they’ll urge people to 

walk more, even if only for their own health. 

The survey showed 6.2% of the 

respondents use bicycles, 3.4% take the 

bus, 1% use the monorail, and 1.3% take 

taxis. Officials say another factor they 

expect to increase traffic is the rising num-

winners in the ages 0-5 

category will receive a $100 

gift certificate, and winners in 

the 6 & up category will 

receive a bicycle.

and Air Force Exchange Service 

has announced plans for a Holiday 

Bazaar Thanksgiving weekend. 

The November 23~25 extravaganza 

at the Camp Foster Field House will feature 

hundreds of items from more than 

15 countries, as dozens of vendors 

scramble to get a piece of the holiday 

season business. AAFES says the 

Holiday Bazaar is a ‘must attend’ event, 

because its 40+ vendors will be offering 

great gifts, great deals, and fun for the 

whole family.

Museum opens 

Nearly 10,000 showed up a 

week ago for the grand opening of 

Okinawa Prefecture’s new Museum 

and Gallery, ooh’ing and aahh’ing 

the exhibition focusing on the 

(Editor’s note) This series of 

Japan Update articles introduces 

local parks. It may come as a sur - 

prise to many but Okinawa City 

alone has 91 public parks. The 

parks are great places for families 

with children to go for picnics or 

just to play around. They are gener - 

ally very clean, most have play 

fields for children, and all are free 

for anybody to use. 

Leisure recreation at Chatan 

Town’s Araha Park can be 

found under water, on the 

water, and even in the air. 

The compact park located near 

San-A HambyTown has built its 

reputation around a variety of 

marine sports, family atmosphere 

and the perfect place for a picnic or 

barbeque. Situated on the water, 

Araha Park has parasailing available, 

as well as wakeboards and 

glass boat rides. Check out the park

The park is open daily until 10 

p.m., and offers plenty of parking. 

For those with wanderlust, there’s 

the Hamby Flea Market and San-A 

Okinawa ocean waters and the historic 

roots of the prefecture’s citizens 

Ṫhe permanent exhibition keys 

on the Ryukyu Archipelago’s birth 

and traces life through the ages to 

the present. The islanders’ lives and 

natural environment, and insights to 

the ocean depths are very exciting 

because of the use of light beams 

and sound. 

The causes of ocean typhoons 

are explained in museum exhibits, 

and archeological finds, including 

animal bones, are on display in the 

museum. Other sections of the 

Hamby Town nearby. To visit 

Araha Park, travel Highway 58 to 

Chatan, then take a left if going 

north, or right turn if going south, 

toward San-A. The park is at the 

end of the road.

The new Prefecture Museum is 

located next to Naha Main Place in 

Omoromachi. Open Tuesday 

through Sunday 9 a.m. ~ 8 p.m., the 

museum is closed Mondays. Last 

entry is at 7:30 p.m. daily. Adult 

admission is ¥400, and high school 

age student entry is ¥250. Junior 

high school and elementary school 

student entry is free. All children 

can have free admission by presenting 

a school pass, available to all 

schools in the Prefecture for free.
