Robinhood
BBC America has been playing the 13-episode fantasy series that took the UK by storm late last year: an updated Robin Hood, complete with a gang of bow-hunting, emo "merry men" and a villainous Sir Guy of Gisborne who is clearly intended to look like Trent Reznor. Battling lady ninjas and warmongering politicians, the merry men trade barbs, zoom through a gorgeous forest on horses (the show is filmed in Budapest), and occasionally rob from the rich and give to the poor. One of the modern touches in this show is that Robin Hood always takes the "scientific view" of everything, poking fun at this companions' superstitions about fairies and crosses alike. Also, the merry men are co-ed: not only does Maid Marion kick ass, but so does the tomboyish Djak, an excellent fighter. Lovers of Xena: Warrior Princess and RenFaire will find much to adore here, but so will anyone who likes a well-paced adventure. Check out the show on BBC America, or pick up the DVDs.
