The Blue Bird-of-Paradise is a relatively rare species with phenomenal coloration, and is thus one of the most legendary of the Birds-of-Paradise.  It’s high on the list of any traveler to New Guinea interested in birds, and of course was on mine.  The brilliant blue color of this bird’s plumage is created not by pigments, but by the selective reflection of certain wavelengths of light from the microstructure within the feathers.  When seen in the right light, they seem to glow from within, and I wanted to capture this brilliant blue color in a photograph.  My best opportunity came at a fruiting tree that we found on the outskirts of the Tari Valley in Papua New Guinea with the help of our local guides.  It seemed to be a favorite feeding tree for the male Blue Bird-of-Paradise of the area, and a steep hillside across from the tree afforded me a place for a blind with a good view.  The male usually made a few quick visits every morning, but the challenge was that most of the tree was a leafy tangle and while I could glimpse the bird, didn’t afford any clear views.  Finally one morning in beautiful soft light that best makes his feathers glow, he landed in this rather open lower branch of the tree on his foraging rounds, and afforded me the opportunity to make this image.
