How to Create an Easy Halloween Costume With Makeup You Already Have

I've been obsessed with makeup since I can remember (I used to ask my mom if I could wear her red lipstick constantly) and starting today I'll be doing makeup tutorials for Teen Vogue. From looks I'm obsessed with (aka everrrrrything Euphoria) to replicating the craziest makeup some of your favorite celebs have been wearing, I am here to give you the courage to where that blue eyeliner out of the house.

Since this month is Halloween, the category is: scary, gory, but easy to replicate. I wanted to be more makeup focused this year because I never challenged my makeup skills during Halloween! I’ve always concentrated on getting the costume right and never really thought about the makeup. I also wanted to give some inspiration for people who don’t want to spend a lot of money on a costume they may only wear once.

I’ve always really loved vampires, especially the Twilight series (#teamedward, am I right?), so I decided to try an alluring vampire that looks good enough to attract its prey, which involved fake fangs and fake blood that I ordered on Amazon.

The second look I decided to go with was Queen Maleficent, one of my favorite Disney villains with obviously the best cheekbones. I really love this look because it is a really nice balance between pretty and scary. The character also deals with the duality of good and evil, and I really liked playing with that idea. I chose not to use prosthetics because I felt that that would be the hardest thing for people to get their hands on and would take some time to make. Instead, I used makeup as an illusion for the cheekbones to make this costume more accessible!\

Catch-A-Soulmate Vampire Look

Step One: First, I used Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen to get SPF protection and a clear, matte base. Then, I applied Revlon’s Colorstay Foundation in Fresh Beige and Flesh Beauty Pure Flesh Foundation in Cookie with my fingers all over my face. I used these shades because the combination gives me that perfect matte (but not drying), complexion I am looking for, as we all know vampires cannot be in the sun, don’t sleep and are very pale. I follow up with Milk Makeup Flex Concealer in Medium for extra coverage.

Pro tip: Applying with my fingers gets me the most coverage and the most natural complexion. Pat McGrath does it, and so do I!!!

Step Two: To give my face more definition, I contoured my face and nose with the Benefit Hoola Bronzer. The brush that it comes with is the perfect density and shape for the cheekbones and nose. Then, I define my brows with Glossier Brow Flick in Brown.

Step Three: I follow with Pacifica Beauty’s Cosmic Reflect Hemp Infused Eyeshadows in “Magic Wand” on the eyelids (around the crease) and on the lower lash line to create that “tired” vampire look. Then, I swiped the bright red in the Viseart Grande Pro 3 palette to give a more bloodshot eye look.

Step Four: To balance out looking pretty and tired at the same time, I defined my eyes with the MAC black liquid eyeliner and created a wing on both sides to elongate my eyes. I followed up with Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions, my favorite mascara of the moment! It gives me thick, long eyelashes and holds the curl. I finished off the brows with Glossier’s Boy Brow in Brown for natural thickness and definition for the brows.

Step Five: I finished off my lips with Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipstick in Gingerbread Girl, it reminds me of blood but slightly more orange and the matte texture will help the fake blood stay on nicely. To finish off the Vampire look, I applied my fangs and fake blood I found on Amazon. This was my first time applying fangs and fake blood ever! The fangs are customizable with solution that will create a mold for your teeth. The fake blood is kinda messy and sticky, but it tastes really good (like cherry candy), no wonder why people have so much fun with it!

Queen Maleficent

Step One: Apply Heir Atelier’s Face Primer to achieve a matte base for the foundation. For foundation, I used Revlon’s Colorstay Foundation in Fresh Beige and Flesh Beauty Pure Foundation in Cookie to get that “perfect neutral tone, paler version of me” complexion. The modern take on Maleficent is pale with piercing eyes, pale skin, and bright red lips and I really wanted to emulate that in this look. This foundation combination does it in the most subtle way.

Step Two: To get Maleficent’s defined cheekbones without prosthetics, I used Fenty Beauty’s Matchstix in Mocha. To further create sharp cheekbones, I applied the Milk Makeup Flex Concealer in Medium under the eyes, on the high points of my cheeks, and near my jawline.

Step Three: I wanted to create Maleficent’s large eyes with eyeshadow and I used the Pacifica Beauty Cosmic Reflect Hemp Infused Eyeshadows in “Magic Wand”. I applied this shade around where a natural crease would be (since I don’t have one) and on the upper and lower lash line.

Step Four: To create a thicker looking lash line, I used the MAC black liquid eyeliner as close to the eyelashes as possible. Then, I created long, thick eyelashes with Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions, this is a plant-based fiber mascara gives fullness and holds the curl of the eyelashes.

Step Five: To get Maleficent’s bright red lips, I first defined and overdrew my lips with Esum Dual Lip Pencil in Red. Then, I finished off the lips with Maybelline’s Ruby for Me Lipstick, for a satin finish.

And, viola! I added a cape, horns, and choker to complete the look.
