How do artists make collages?

A collage is a piece of art made from different pieces of paper, photos and other materials.

Collages also might have painting and drawing on them.

Collage artists spend time arranging the materials and trying out different ideas, before sticking them onto a surface.

They tear or cut materials before sticking them together.

Make your own collage

  • You could make a collage using pieces of paper that would otherwise be thrown away, such as envelopes and old newspapers. Make sure you ask an adult if you are not sure what to use.

  • You could have a go at collaging an imaginary face using different types of paper and card, in the style of Brianna McCarthy.

The French word papier collé  is where the word collage came from. It means pasted paper or paper cut-outs.
