A mismatch in expectations exists between Australia's precious metals industry and the ATO around sensitive verifications for GST returns, a report has found.

Inspector-General of Taxation Ali Noroozi has warned that taxpayers misunderstand the time needed for the return of GST refunds in the industry, while the ATO works to avoid serious fraud, including thwarting so-called "missing trader" transactions.
