Newcastle is situated in the heart of the Hunter Region and bordered by a stunning coastline with beautiful beaches.

As Australia's second oldest city, Newcastle is a region rich with unique history.

The Awabakal and Worimi peoples are recognised and acknowledged as traditional custodians of the land and waters of the Newcastle area.

Following European settlement, Newcastle became a penal station, a coal town and a steel city. Today, it is NSW's second largest city and the seventh largest city in Australia.

Located at the mouth of the Hunter River, it lays claim to an exceptional mix of agriculture, natural attractions and industry.

The topography of the area is diverse with sand dunes, wetlands and coastal national parks complementing the hustle and bustle of city life.

Newcastle is easily accessible by air, rail, boat, interstate and local coach services, and the city offers a range of local public transport services, as well as cycleways and walking tracks.

Newcastle boasts a diversified commercial, cultural, trade and industrial economy.

Surrounding areas include Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Hunter Valley and Maitland.

ABC Newcastle is a vibrant station with a strong on air line up including three daily programs every weekday, and a Saturday breakfast and morning program line up.

The enthusiastic team of producers, presenters and reporters create strong local radio and online content, working closely with five news journalists in Newcastle and two more reporters based in Muswellbrook.

Chief of staff Lucia Hill says the station is well-placed to reflect what is going on in the community.

"The role of this station is to connect with people right across the Hunter," she says.

"We see ourselves as reflecting the trends, the stories, and the moods of this region.

"ABC Newcastle has a history of being there when disasters happen but also of entertaining and informing the community."
