Ballet Russe

One of the most famous ballet companies in the world, the Ballet Russe’s choreography is influenced by the Russian culture and embraced by Paris. The company was founded by the Russian impresario Sergey Diaghilev who was also responsible for creating many of the most important works of the twentieth-century music. They debuted at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris during the summer of 1909. The company included dancers Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina, Ida Rubinstein, and Vaslav Nijinsky. Mikhail Fokine was the choreographer of the Ballet Russe who constructed most of the elaborate dances which led to the modern ballet. After Diaghilev’s death in 1929, the company was reformed in Monte Carlo. Their performances include The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), The Rite of Spring (1913)Pulcinella (1920), and Le pas d’acier (1927).

    Kaitlin,

Thanks for sharing this video of Firebird. I was interested in what the ballet actually looked like after listening to the example in our module of the composition, but I had forgotten to look it up. I love the scenery and costumes used in this ballet.

The Ballet Rouse was interesting because it was a new breed of ballet. It strayed away from the traditional style of the opera, along with Stravinsky’s other composition. It is always good for innovation in any type of genre of music and he is one who paved the way for new ideas in the early 1900’s.

This is a great description of Ballet Russe. But do you like the choreography and ballets that they have made over the years?
