Maurizio Anzeri is an Italian artist, whose work mainly consists of vintage portraits that he has manipulated via sewing directly onto the images. In my opinion the work represents movement which is highlighted via the sewings. The portraits are in black and white but then Anzeri contrasts it with the sewings by using vibrant colours for the thread. The use of vibrant colours of the thread emphasises on the direction. Due to the use of the thread, the lines that are created are textured. The use of sewing is a type of repetition where it’s showing a pattern of direction/movement. What attracted me to his work, is the fact that he displays movement in a very unique way. Movement is shown via the sewing within his work, an example of this is the image on the far left with the women´s mouth wide open and then the sewing coming from her mouth. Movement is also shown within the formal elements. What I like about his work is that there is contrast between the actual portrait image and the colour of the thread. However, what I don’t like about the image is that I feel like there is more meaning behind the thread. I feel like the thread doesn’t just represent movement but it also represents the thoughts and feelings of the model. In both cases the models thoughts/feelings don’t seem very positive which sets a negative mood of the image.
Matthieu Bourel
Matthieu Bourel is an Italian artist who specialises in collages and digital work. The words that I would use to describe his work is simplistic but surreal. His work to me is simplistic as the process of creating his work is simple. To create his work he uses digital editing where he copy and pastes the surface of the faces and creates a mini collage. Bourel also uses this technique to create Gifs. I think Bourel´s Gifs are most effective when it comes to creating movement, this is because it literally shows the movement of the faces. What draws me to Bourel´s work is the fact that most of it is in black and white. To me the black and white makes me focus on the movement of the picture. The only thing that I dislike about Bourel´s work is the fact that the models face are neutral and doesn’t show any emotions. This sets the mood of the picture to be neutral where I don’t actually know what mood / effect the artist is trying to achieve. This has influenced me as I feel like I could replicate his work on photoshop.
Joseph Parra
Joseph Parra is an artist where his work mainly reflects on the human figure and portraits. The words that I would use to describe his work are unique and realistic. I feel like its realistic in the fact that you can clearly interpret / make out what the image is. Its unique in the terms that at first you cant tell the technique/ how he achieved his images. To achive his work Parra folds , cuts and braid the paper, he does this as he says “It expresses the complex nature of humanity”. Although Parra´s work initially represents humanity, to me it reflects on movement. An exampple of this is the image to the far right, where its distorted / blury but the use of the scratches sort of places a direction within the image. Within Parra´s work he uses neutral colours which sets a light mood. For each of his works, theres different types of textures that occur. For example, the image on the far right, I feel like it’s a smooth / soft texture as the image is blurry.
