What to see in Summer Bay

Home and Away has been on our TV screens since 1988 and the famous Aussie soap is set in a fictional town called Summer Bay. Did you know most of it is filmed in Palm Beach, Sydney?  Palm Beach is a beautiful location for the show and if you’re lucky, you may even spot the show being filmed!

Summer Bay Diner, Alf’s Bait Shop and the Pier Diner are all in the same location. In real life this is The Boathouse Palm Beach, and it is currently under construction – due to open late 2023.

Summer Bay Beach

Summer Bay Beach

Picturesque Palm Beach has been the setting of the show since the beginning and it is a great spot to pretend you are on set of the show. Palm Beach, affectionately known as ‘Palmy”, is a public beach and perfect for a swim or surf.

The southern end of the beach is home to the Summer Bay Beach rockpool. On the show, Shannon nearly drowned here, and Charlotte King was shot in the 2015 finale. Around the corner from the rockpool are the rocks where most of the characters go when they need some time to themselves.

Address: Palm Beach, Sydney Australia

Summer Bay Surf Club

Probably the most recognisable places from the show is the Surf Club which has had plenty of storylines revolve around this iconic spot. In real life the surf club is used as the North Palm Beach Surf club but they have the Summer Bay SLSC sign up all year round. If you look closely you can spot ‘A.Stewart’ listed as the club official.  There is also an adjoining kiosk where you can grab a snack or pick up a souvenir or two.

Summer Bay Lighthouse

Barrenjoey Lighthouse - Palm Beach

Summer Bay Lighthouse at Stewart’s Point was first featured in the opening credits in 1993. This was the spot Ash and Robbo had their iconic fight and Shane and dared Kevin to abseil down the side of the lighthouse at night. In real life, this lighthouse is known as the Barrenjoey Lighthouse.

This historical spot can be accessed by foot and from the top you can enjoy views down to the beach and beautiful Pittwater. There are 2 walking track options – 1. the gentler Barrenjoey track and 2. the steeper Smugglers Track.

Address: 1199D Barrenjoey Rd, Palm Beach

If you are hoping to see some filming, the best days to see the crew in action are Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday – except for Christmas time and a few weeks in July, when the production takes a break.

Join a Home and Away Tour with Celeb Time to experience all the filming spots in one day. You’ll visit the Summer Bay Surf Club, Alf’s Bait Shop and the iconic rock pool. The tours depart from Sydney CBD, and it is best to book in advance to ensure you secure a seat.
