Cutleaf Daisy

27 Apr

The cutleaf daisy, Erigeron compositus, has been showing its bright little blooms in sunny spots around southeast Wyoming and northern Colorado.  This is another type of flower that doesn’t get all that big–things that bloom this time of year in this part of the country don’t seem to get very large–but it can sometimes be found in large numbers in a suitably open spot.

This species can also be called dwarf mountain fleabane or trifid mountain fleabane.  It seems to thrive in dry, rocky soils.  Cutleaf daisy can be recognized by the single flowers with yellow discs emerging on leafless stems from a base of fuzzy, divided leaves.  The flowers can supposedly be white, pink or even bluish, but I have only ever seen white petals.
