The 26 December 2004 tsunami was caused by a 9.3 magnitude earthquake, out in the Indian Ocean.
The Eurasian and indo-australian tectonic (Tectonic plates) were moving towards each other.
The pressure got too much and the Indo-australian plate slipped under the Eurasian plate that sent out shock-waves which resulted in the earthquake.. And as the result of the earthquake there was massive displacement of water and this caused a powerful tsunami.
Almost 230,000 people were killed and the livelihoods of millions were destroyed in over 10 countries. It is the largest natural disasters in recent natural history. Towns and people were literaly swept away by the wave and the environment was torn up and washed all over the country.
Once the tectonic plates have shifted, on the lands shore, the ocean is being sucked back into its self and being release with a huge amount of force and speed flowing to the inner areas of the city/town. Shock waves after the first movement to the plates continue after quite some time and still create large waves and swells that reach the inner landscape. Wave after wave of destruction leave damaged and destroyed areas affected by this tsunami as people run for their lives.
