Google Announces 2008 Sydney Developer Event
Google Developer Day Event in Sydney Will Focus on Building Great Web Apps and Advancing the Web as a Platform
SYDNEY, Australia -- April 22, 2008 -- Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced a new developer event for 2008: Google Developer Day, a one-day, in-depth gathering for developers to share knowledge about Google's own developer products and web application development in general. Google Developer Day will be held at Wharf 8, Sydney on Wednesday, June 18th 2008, and is free to attend.
"Last year's Developer Day in Australia was a tremendous success, as it brought together developers from across Australia, and started a conversation we're excited to continue in June," said Alan Noble, head of engineering for Google Australia and New Zealand. "In the past year, the web has evolved to be a more open and collaborative platform, and Australian developers have pushed us to expect new and greater things from our experience on the web. Our upcoming Developer Day is an opportunity for the Australian developer community to learn about these innovations, to place our Australian developments in a global context, and to continue building a web that is open and useful to developers and users alike."
Tools for Making the Web Better
At Google Developer Day, attendees will hear from top Google engineers and get a mix of practical, hands-on advice for building web apps as well as opportunities to learn about emerging programming trends.
Sessions at the event will cover:
- AJAX & JavaScript: AJAX and JavaScript continue to capture the imagination of web developers. These sessions focus on tools and techniques of client-side code, and how to use them to make serious applications quickly and easily.
- APIs & Tools: Development tools for the web are evolving. Product APIs allow integration and extension of web applications. Tools like the Google Web Toolkit™ provide a whole new way to improve performance and compatibility.
- Social: The web is an inherently social place. A new wave of APIs and frameworks, including OpenSocial, are opening up interesting ways to interact with people through applications.
- Mobile: Mobile devices are blurring the lines between handset developers and web developers, opening up interesting opportunities for applications that span multiple platforms. We'll take a look at how developers can use technologies such as Android™ and Mobile Gears to build applications on the mobile web.
- Maps & Geo: Since the introduction of the Google Maps™ API in 2005, geo and map applications have been one of the most interesting phenomena on the web. These sessions focus on the many aspects of geo applications, from KML to the Google Maps API and more.
The sessions will allow attendees to learn first-hand from leading Google engineers from Sydney like Lars Rasmussen, Ben Appleton, Mike Jones, Dmitri Abramov, David Day, and many more. We are also pleased to welcome David Glazer, Engineering Director at Google, as our keynote speaker.
