Description

DELAYED CORD CLAMPING AND SIMPLE RESUSCITATION OR
BED ACCESSORY FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to newborn baby delivery platforms. More particularly, the invention relates to a safe, sterile surface to effectively delay cord clamping and perform a simple resuscitation with a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) mask for babies born via C-section.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In delayed umbilical cord clamping, generally the umbilical cord is not clamped or cut until 3-5 minutes after birth when pulsations have ceased, or until after the placenta is delivered. Delayed cord clamping provides a necessary blood volume for the transition to life outside the womb for the baby.
Currently, the facilitation of delayed cord clamping and performing simple resuscitations is an expensive and complicated procedure. Delayed cord clamping is becoming the "standard of care" in labor and delivery, however one disadvantage is the generally short length of the baby's cord inhibits delayed cord clamping during a C-Section birth. What is needed is an inexpensive and more effective method to offer delayed cord clamping to infants born in the OR. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
To address the needs in the art, a delayed cord-clamping surface is provided that includes a newborn platform having a recessed surface configured to receive a chemical warming mattress, where the chemical warming mattress includes a conformable surface, where the newborn platform includes a detachable platform support that is configured to position the newborn platform proximal to a surgical region of a C-section patient, where the newborn platform is configured to support a newborn baby while an umbilical cord remains connected between the newborn and the C-section patient for draining from a placenta, where the newborn platform is configured to fitably mount with a warming table when the newborn platform is in a detached state from the detachable platform support.
According to one aspect of the invention, the detachable platform support includes vertical supports detachably connected to the newborn platform, where the vertical supports are configured for positioning outside a lower body region of the C-section patient.
In another aspect of the invention, the detachable platform support includes an articulating arm connected to a structure selected from the group consisting of a surgical bed, a moveable cart, and a ceiling. In a further aspect of the invention, the detachable platform includes a connection element for detachably connecting to the newborn platform selected from the group consisting of friction mounting, indexed male-female mounting, and magnetic mounting.
In yet another aspect of the invention, the newborn platform includes handles, where the hands include recesses in a sidewall of the newborn platform, or protrusions in the sidewall of the newborn platform.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The current invention provides a solution for facilitating delayed cord clamping and simple resuscitations in the OR during a C-Section birth. According to one embodiment, the invention sits or is positioned directly on or near a mom's lap below the surgical region, or wound site, so that when a baby is born he/she is easily transferred to the surface for 1-2 minutes while all blood transfers to the baby before cutting the cord. Since the average umbilical cord is 50cm long, using a table that rolls up next to the OR bed often is not optimal as some cords cannot reach an adjacent table (approx. 30%). According to one embodiment of the invention, the surface has the density needed to perform CPAP resuscitations in addition to delayed cord clamping. In a further embodiment, the invention has a depression to house a chemical warming mattress that comes loaded inside a sterile paper "pillowcase" for fast and easy set up in the OR. These two items are "loaded" in a sterile paper pillowcase (sheet) and placed over the mom just below the site of the wound. Having close proximity to the wound is important so that any cord can reach without being affected. The current invention addresses hospital's desire to offer optimal care in the OR during a C-section birth. The chemical warming mattress has two functions a) to keep the baby warm and avoid hypothermia while the cord blood is draining (1 min.) b) to keep the baby secure since the warming mattress acts like a waterbed mattress— depressing down where the baby is laying. This stability in important so that the infant's head does not move inappropriately and cause neural damage. Currently, pre-term infants are handled by a clinician physically holding the neck and leg when transferring to a warming table for a more complex resuscitation. This kind of handling may cause physical trauma. In a further embodiment, the invention is made from recyclable materials so that the entire unit may be disposed of after surgery.
A medium density foam surface formed specifically for mom's lap area on the OR bed that has a depression to house a chemical heating mattress. These two items would come "loaded" in a sterile paper pillowcase (sheet) and be placed over mom just below the site of the wound. Having close proximity to the wound is important so that any cord can reach without being affected.
Turning now to the figures, FIGs. 1A-1C show examples of the newborn platform and warming table, where FIG. 1A shows the newborn platform attached to the detachable platform support, which is represented as a moveable cart positioned adjacent to a surgical bed. Also shown is a newborn placed on the newborn platform. FIG. IB shows the newborn platform in a detached state from the articulating arm of the detachable platform support and positioned for placement in the mount of the warming table. FIG. 1C shows a perspective top view of the connection of the newborn platform with the detachable platform support, where the connection can be frictional fit, indexed male-female fitting, magnetic mounting or any combination thereof. FIG. 2 shows a schematic view of one embodiment of a C-section patient having the newborn platform position near the surgical region, where the umbilical cord remains attached to the placenta for draining before delayed clamping. The newborn platform is shown supported by the articulating arm of the detachable platform support. FIG. 3 shows one embodiment of the newborn platform and detachable platform support, where the newborn platform is configured to attach to the detachable platform support according to frictional fit, indexed male-female fitting, magnetic mounting or any combination thereof, according to the current invention. FIGs. 4A-4C show a further embodiment of the invention, where FIG. 4A shows a side view of the detachable platform support slideably connected to the surgical bed for positioning. FIG. 4B shows a front view of the detachable platform support slideably connected to the surgical bed for positioning. FIG. 4C shows a top view of the newborn platform and detachable platform support, where further shown is the articulating arm of the detachable platform support mechanism connected to the newborn platform, according to one embodiment the current invention.
FIG. 5 shows a perspective bottom view of a newborn platform in a detached state from the detachable platform support. Here the newborn platform is shown configured to attach to the detachable platform support according to frictional fit, indexed male-female fitting, magnetic mounting or any combination thereof, according to the current invention.
FIGs. 6A-6B show a newborn platform having a recessed surface configured to receive the chemical warming mattress, wherein the chemical warming mattress is a conformable surface that adapts to the shape of the recessed surface. FIG. 6A further shows the newborn platform having recessed handles, and FIG. 6B shows the newborn platform having protruding handles, according to embodiments of the current invention. FIG. 7A shows a perspective top view of a newborn platform having the chemical warming mattress recessed surface and vertical supports disposed to be capable of surrounding a C- section patient lower body portion, according to one embodiment of the invention. FIG. 7B shows a perspective top view of a newborn platform that is configured to rest on a mother's lap.
FIG. 8 shows the newborn platform connected to a detachable platform support that is suspended from a ceiling, according to one embodiment of the invention.
The present invention has now been described in accordance with several exemplary embodiments, which are intended to be illustrative in all aspects, rather than restrictive. Thus, the present invention is capable of many variations in detailed implementation, which may be derived from the description contained herein by a person of ordinary skill in the art.
