Description

TRAINING APPARATUS 1
The present invention relates to an improved training apparatus being equipped with pedals, or a therapeutical bicycle suitable for training the legs of a user of the apparatus by means of cyclic movements. Such bicycles are particularly suitable for persons with a reduced functionality in the legs.
It is known to use pedal driven training apparatuses for the training of the legs of a user, where the feet are leading or being led by peda ls in cyclic
movements. In addition to normal training bicycles, there are also more compact apparatuses, that only comprise a wheel arrangement with associated pedals, where the wheel arrangement is protected by some sort of casing or boxing . These training apparatuses can be used with a training mat, where the user is lying on the floor and treading on the pedals, or be placed in front of a chair or wheel chair, where the user is sitting in the chair or wheel chair and training while sitting .
Such training apparatuses should preferably be portable in order to bring it from one place to another in an easy way and will consequently have a compact size. Therefore will the knees of the user not lie on each side of the training apparatus, but rather above or in front of some of these training apparatuses. For users with little control over their leg movements, it can be a problem that the knees bump into each other, when the user does cyclic movements on the training apparatus.
It is an object of the present invention to present a training apparatus suitable for use both for a sitting and a lying user, where the legs of the user are prevented from bumping into each other and thereby causing pain and discomfort for the user.
This is obtained by a training apparatus according to the attached independent claim 1. Advantageous embodiments are stated in the attached dependent claims.
The invention thereby relates to a training apparatus comprising a wheel casing with a front side that will face the user of the apparatus and a pedal arrangement comprising a pedal arm or crank and pedal rotatable attached to the pedal arm or crank, where a fin is shiftably connected to the front side.
The fin will be placed between the knees of the user of the training apparatus and will thereby prevent the knees from bumping into each other and thereby cause discomfort and even pain for the user.
In one aspect of the above described training apparatus, the fin has a user side and a wheel casing side and comprises a rail arranged on the wheel casing side, mating with a track arranged in the front side of the wheel casing . Thereby it is possible to slide the fin by means of the rail up and down in the track in the front side of the wheel casing, so that the optimum position for each user is found.
In one aspect of the training apparatus, the fin comprises a locking arrangement for fixing the fin in the desired position by means of a locking organ or a lever. Thereby it is obtained a quick and easy securing of the fin subsequent to the manual adjustment to the right position.
In one preferred embodiment of the above described training apparatus, the fin is provided with a hole suitable for the passing of an elastic band. Such an elastic band can hold one or two cuffs, collars or the like suitable for being attached to or around the knees of the user, so that the elastic band and collars hold the knees within a given distance from the wheel casing.
In one aspect of the above described training apparatus, the crank is integrated in a pedal wheel comprising a fastening organ for rotatable connection of a pedal to the wheel. The pedal wheel rotates with the pedals and thereby protects the user from the movable parts of the training cycle and prevents that e.g.
clothing or straps are wedged between the wheel casing and a crank.
In one embodiment of the training apparatus as described above, the pedal can be rotatably connected to any place along the radius of the pedal wheel in a radially arranged recess. Thereby, it is possible to adjust the rotational length and diameter of the pedal according to the capacity and leg length of the user.
Furthermore is it possible to arrange the two pedals on each side of the wheel casing at different distances from the axle of the pedal wheel, if the user has different capacity, length or other between the legs.
It is advantageous to provide the above mentioned training apparatus with at least one handle. The handle will simplify transport and handling of the apparatus.
Furthermore, it is advantageous to provide the above mentioned training apparatus with at least one support led. By the provision of support legs the protrudes from the training apparatus for example from the wheel casing, one can obtain a stable apparatus independently of the width of the training apparatus. It is advantageous with a narrow training apparatus, so that the legs of the user of the apparatus are not pushed from each other by the distance between the pedals. The support legs ensure that the apparatus cannot turn over during use.
In one aspect of the training apparatus, it further comprises a locking arrangement for locking the training apparatus to a chair or a wheel chair arrangement. Such a locking arrangement can for example be arranged on the underside of the wheel casing and can comprise a hooking device, a clamp coupling arrangement or other that can be coupled to an adjacent chair or wheel chair arrangement, so that the training apparatus and chair or wheel chair arrangement are kept at a fixed distance from each other during used.
The invention will now be further described with reference to a non-limiting example of an embodiment of the invention by means of the attached drawings where:
Figure 1 shows a side view of a training apparatus according to the present invention in a first user position.
Figure 2 shows a side view of the training apparatus of fig. 1 in a second user position.
Figure 3 shows a top view of the training apparatus in fig. 1.
Figure 4 shows a side view of the training apparatus in fig. 1 with a chair suitable for use with the training apparatus.
Figure 5 shows a side view of the training apparatus in fig. 1 with a mat arrangement suitable for use with the training apparatus.
Figure 6 shows a perspective view of the training apparatus during use.
Figure 7 shows different views of a fin suitable for use with the training apparatus in fig. 1.
Figure 1 shows a training apparatus 1 according to the present invention comprising a wheel casing 2, where a pedal arm or crank 3 with pedals 4 are rotatabiy attached to the crank 3 on each side of the wheel casing. The crank 3 can be integrated in a pedal wheel 5, where the crank is a radial attachment
arrangement, where the pedal can be slidable and attachable any place along the length of the crank, so that the rotational distance of the pedals can be adjusted, the wheel casing 2 has a front side facing the user, a back side 29 facing away from the user, an upper side 30 and an under side 31.
The training apparatus 1 can be further equipped with a handle for simplified moving of the apparatus. On the front side 28, there is provided a fin 7. The fin 7 has a sufficient size to be able to lie between the knees of the user, when the legs are moving with the pedals, but not large enough to abut on the crotch of the user. The fin 7 lies against and is slidably or shiftably connected to the front side of the training apparatus.
Figure 2 shows the training apparatus of fig. 1 with the fin 7 in a second user position. If the user of the apparatus is sitting in front of the apparatus, the hips of the user will lie a distance above the ground, which will change the angle of the legs in relation to the apparatus and thereby also the position of the knees as the knees as well will be higher in relation to the cycle. Therefore the fin 7 can be shifted upwards until it lies between the knees of the user. The fin 7 is slidably mounted to the training apparatus, so that it can be adjusted in relation to each single user.
Figure 3 shows a training apparatus 1 seen from above. The pedals are attached close to the wheel casing 2, so that the apparatus will not push the user's legs away from each other, but rather let the legs hold a natural angle in relation to the width of the hips of the user. If it is desirable to provide a larger distance between the pedals, the axle 8 (see fig. 2) with which the pedal is attached to the crank, can be prolonged.
The training apparatus 1 further comprises support legs 9 on each side of the wheel casing 2, to hold the wheel casing in the right position. The support legs 9 can be hinged or in another way rotatably or releasably connected to the training apparatus, so that they can be folded towards the wheel casing or taken off for transport.
Figure 4 shows a training apparatus 1 placed in front of a chair 10 suitable for use with the apparatus. The fin 7 is lifted to a height that is suitable for the sitting height of the chair.
Fig. 5 shows the training apparatus 1 together with an arrangement for wheel chair comprising an arched handle 11 under which the wheel chair is place and which can be used as a handle for the user, and a wheel chair underlay 12, preferably made in a material with high friction, ridges or other that provide a good grip for the wheel chair (not shown) in locked positon. As the sitting height of the wheel chair to be placed in the arrangement, is somewhat higher that the sitting height of the chair in fig. 4, the fin 7 is placed in a higher position in fig. 5 than in fig. 4. It is an important advantage with the present invention that the height of the fin 7 is slidably mounted to the wheel chair and thereby can be adjusted to any seat height or knee height of the user.
Fig. 6 shows a drawing of the training apparatus with the legs of a user having the knees 13 on each side of the fin 7 and the feet 14 placed in the pedals. The complete or parts of the fin 7 can advantageously be provided with a soft or impact absorbing material, so that the user does not get harmed or experience pain if the knees hit hard against the fin. Furthermore can it be seen on fig. 6 that the user has a sleeve 15 around the knees, of which only one is visible. The sleeve 15 is attached with an elastic band 16 that is connected with the fin 7. The sleeve supports the knee and the elastic band buffer the outwards movements of the knee. In an advantageous embodiment, there is arranged one sleeve around each knee, where an elastic band is attached to each of the sleeve, so that it forms a connection between the two sleeves. The elastic band 16 can be lead through a hole 17 in the fin 7 so that the sleeve are both connected to each other and to the fin.
Fig. 7a-d shows the fin 7 in views from above, from the side facing the wheel casing, from the side and from the side facing away from the wheel casing. The fin comprises a rounded user side 18 that will face the users, a wheel casing side 19, an upper side 20 and an under side 21 which in the shown embodiment is inclined in relation to the wheel casing side, se fig. 7c. The wheel casing side 19 comprises a straight surface provided with a rail or bar 22 protruding from the wheel casing side. The wheel casing is provided with a recess or groove into which the rail is pushed. The fin 7 is thereby sideways locked to the wheel casing by means of a rail-in-groove connection. Thereby the rail on the fin can be pushed up and down in the groove to find the best position according to the legs of the user. Thereafter the fin is locked in sideways direction, i.e. movement up and down, by means of a locking device 23 clamping a part of the rail 22 onto the groove by means of a lever 24 in generally known ways.
The fin 7 can advantageously comprise a lead through or hole 17 suitable for leading an elastic band there through, where the elastic band can be used to help the user hold the knees together. However it is also envisageable that a separate elastic band attached to each sleeve for example can be attached to hooks on each side of the fin, or that the elastic band can be led through a hook or bow on one of the sides of the fin, preferably the upper side 20 or the user side 18.
A fin according to the invention is well suited for use with electrical training apparatuses, where pedals are connected to a driving gear that in larger or lesser extent can be used as an auxiliary motor for movement of the pedals. Such electrically driven training apparatuses can thus be provided with a control panel for control of driving gear and other. The training apparatus can also comprise a panel with outlets for hand control, power supply and data control.
The training apparatus comprises a pedal arrangement attached to a wheel arrangement in a wheel casing, so that the user is trained to do cyclic movements with the legs. It is also envisageable to replace the above described fin with a pillow or the like and the pedals with handles, so that the training apparatus also can be used for training the arms of the user.
As the fin 7 is pushed down in a groove on the side of the wheel casing 2, it is for example easy to interchange to a narrower or smaller fin for users with short legs or a broader fin for users with long legs. The shiftable fin 7 makes the training apparatus especially well-suited for use with persons sitting in a chair, while the adjustable height of the fin ensures a good protection for the users in any position in relation to the pedals. It will therefore be evident to a person skilled in the art that the training apparatus can be used by a bedridden person, where the fin 7 will be in the lowermost position and the support legs 9 will support the apparatus on the bed.
The shiftable fin ensures that the knees will not be in conflict with each other during motion. It is preferably made in a material with minimum friction. By adjusting the fin up and down angularly with a cycle unit or training apparatus, the fin can be adjusted to different leg lengths. The above described fin can be use by small children and up to adults without changing the dimensions. It is further an advantage with the fin that it can be adjusted without the use of tools, by is loosened by a lever releasing the locking means, is shifted manually to planned position and locked in this position with the lever.
In the above described combination with elastic bands, the legs of the users will not tilt outwards. It is furthermore advantageously to provide an opening or hole in the top of the fin so that the elastic band can move unrestricted through the opening or hole based on the length of the elastic band. The elastic band can be attached around the thighs of the user with a sleeve in each end, see figure 6.
It is beneficial to use an elastic band with connection between the knees due to the flexibility of the elastic band. The user obtains a freedom of movement for the legs within a certain range defined by the length of the elastic band in unloaded and maximum load conditions. This has proved to be very user-friendly, opposed to fixed solutions for the legs by e.g. straps without individual freedom of movement.
