Description

A DIGITAL BROADCAST RECEIVING DEVICE HAVING AN ON-SCREEN DISPLAY MENU
The present invention relates to a digital broadcast receiving device.
In the state of the art, in digital broadcast receiving devices such as television, satellite receiver, etc., on-screen display menus used to adjust the parameters that can be determined according to the preference of the user are present. Menus are displayed on the screen according to the command the user gives when he/she desires to make the said adjustment and disappear by a command after the adjustment is completed.
Colors used for the backgrounds and for the contents of the said menus are generally predetermined and static.
In the United States Patent Application No. US2006044324, an embodiment is explained wherein, in case that there is a conflict between the menu background and the content colors which makes the viewing of the content by the user difficult, the content color is updated by being changed with a color more easily perceived on the background.
In the European Patent Application No. EP20076031, a method is explained wherein the menu background color is dynamically updated so as to be an easily perceivable color according to the color of the image watched at that moment.
The aim of the present invention is the realization of the digital broadcast receiving device having a user-friendly on-screen display menu.
In the storage means of the digital broadcast receiving device realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, an on-screen display menu color is recorded for each different program type. The control unit checks the program type received from the receiver, related to the program displayed at the moment when an on-screen display menu will be opened. Then, the control unit provides the on-screen display menu that will be opened to be in the on-screen display menu color recorded for this program type in the storage means. Thus, harmony between the menu color and the program type is provided by preventing the menus from being in colors degrading the watching pleasure and conflicting with the program the user is watching.
In different embodiments of the present invention, the on-screen display menu can be opened as a result of a command transmitted by the user or as a result of preliminary conditions predetermined by the producer and recorded in the storage means being realized.
The control unit changes the menu color according to the program type in case that the program type changes when the on-screen display menu is open. The program type may change when the channel is changed and a different type of program is broadcast on the new channel started to be watched or when the program being watched ends and a new program of different type begins.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the color information corresponding to the program types recorded in the storage means can be changed by the user. Thus, the user can enable the usage of menu color he/she prefers for each program type.
In another embodiment of the present invention, while the menu color is provided to be in harmony with the program type being watched, it is also aimed that the menu color does not conflict with the image on the screen. For this purpose, the control unit detects the dominant color intensively present in the image on the screen when a command to open the menu is transmitted. In this embodiment of the present invention, more than one color corresponding to each of the program type is recorded in the storage means. The color that is the most easily perceivable by the user on the dominant color in the present image is determined from the colors recorded in the storage means for the program type being watched during the opening of the menu and this color is applied to the menu template.
In another embodiment of the present invention, category information related to some program types are delivered to the receiver besides the program types. For example, for movies tragedy, comedy, horror, etc. or for sports program type football, swimming, skiing, etc. In this embodiment, one color is recorded for each category predetermined by the producer, related to each program type. The color corresponding to the program type and category being watched at that moment is applied to the on-screen display menu template and thus the user is provided with a menu matching the program type and the related sub-category.
The digital broadcast receiving device realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
Figure 1 – is the schematic view of a digital broadcast receiving device.
The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:
  1. Digital broadcast receiving device
  2. Receiver
  3. Storage means
  4. Control unit
The digital broadcast receiving device (1) of the present invention comprises at least one receiver (2) providing the broadcast and program type information related to the programs to be broadcast to be received, at least one storage means (3) wherein more than one on-screen display menu template is recorded and a control unit (4) that chooses the suitable one from the on-screen display menu templates recorded in the storage means (3) and provides the desired menu to be displayed on the screen according to this template, when an on-screen display menu will be opened.
Moreover, at least one on-screen display menu color (C1, C2, C3,...) corresponding to each program type (G1, G2, G3,...) is recorded in the storage means (3). The control unit (4) provides the on-screen display menu color corresponding to the program type related to the program being watched at that moment received from the receiver (2) to be applied to the menu template to be displayed on the screen when an on-screen display menu will be opened. Thus, user satisfaction is achieved by providing the color of the menu displayed on the screen to be in harmony with the type of the program being watched.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (4) applies the on-screen display menu color corresponding to the program type related to the program being watched at that moment received from the receiver (2) to the menu template by changing the menu background color, when an on-screen display menu will be opened.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (4) applies the suitable menu color to the menu template by changing the font and drawing color in the menu.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the on-screen display menu is an electronic program guide menu.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the on-screen display menu is a settings menu used for adjusting the audio, video, etc. settings of the digital broadcast receiving device (1).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (4) spontaneously updates the color being applied to the on-screen display menu template with the on-screen display menu color corresponding to the present program type, recorded in the storage means (3) in case that, while an on-screen display menu is being displayed, the user changes the channel being watched or the program being broadcast ends and another program begins, and thus the program type changes.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (4) enables the user to change the on-screen display menu colors (C1, C2, C3,…) corresponding to each program type (G1, G2, G3,...) recorded in the storage means (3) with the colors (C1u, C2u, C3u,...) he/she prefers. Thus, during each program, the menu can be displayed in the menu color (C1u) that the user finds suitable for the related program type (G1).
In another embodiment of the present invention, more than one on-screen display menu color (C11, C12,… C21, C22,… C31, C32,…) corresponding to each program type (G1, G2, G3,…) is recorded in the storage means (3). In this embodiment, the control unit (4) calculates the dominant color (Cd) in the present image on the screen. The control unit (4) compares the menu colors (C11, C12, ...) corresponding to the program type (G1) information related to the program being watched at that moment received from the receiver (2) with the dominant color (Cd) in the present image on the screen at that moment when an on-screen display menu will be opened. At the end of the comparison, the control unit (4) applies the color (C11) that least matches the dominant color (Cd) in the present image from the on-screen display menu colors (C11, C12,...) corresponding to the related program type (G1) recorded in the storage means (3) to the menu template to be displayed on the screen. For example, the on-screen display menu colors recorded in the storage means for the sports program type be blue, green and orange. And suppose that the dominant color in the image being displayed at that moment be blue, for example a swimming competition is being watched. In this case, the control unit, while determining the color to be applied to the menu template, chooses the color (orange) that least matches the dominant color in the image being displayed at that moment from the colors (blue, green and orange) recorded in the storage means suitable to the sport program type and applies this color to the menu template. Thus, a menu color which is in harmony with the program type being watched by the user and which is easily perceivable by the user in the image being displayed at that moment is used.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the receiver (2) provides the category information (K1, K2, K3,…) for at least one program type to be received besides the program type information (G1). In this embodiment, suitable on-screen display menu color (C1, C2, C3,…) information is recorded in the storage means (3), corresponding to each category (K1, K2, K3,…) for the program types (G1, G2, G3,…), the category information (K1, K2, K3,…) of which is received. In this embodiment, when an on-screen display menu will be opened, according to the program type (G1) and the category (K1) information received from the receiver (2) related to the program being watched at that moment, the control unit (4) provides the on-screen display menu color (C1) recorded in the storage means (3) for this program type (G1) and the category (K1) to be applied to the menu template to be displayed on the screen. For example, when the program type is a movie or a series, sub-information such as comedy, drama, etc. is delivered to the receiver (2) as the category. In this case, it is provided that the menu color to be used in a program in the movie program type and comedy category and the menu color to be used in the movie program type and drama category are different from each other and in harmony with the category and the type. Same example can be given for the sports program type and the football or swimming categories.
By means of the present invention, the on-screen display menu color is provided to be in harmony with the program type being watched at that moment.
It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited by the embodiments disclosed above and a person skilled in the art can easily introduce different embodiments. These should be considered within the scope of the protection postulated by the claims of the present invention.
