Description

CLOTHES PEG AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING A CLOTHES
PEG
The invention relates to a clothes peg, consisting of two halves which are provided to be hingeably and detachably connected to each other at the level of a hinge part, the clothes peg consisting, when the halves are hingeably and detachably connected at the level of the hinge part, at one end of the hinge part, of a gripping part for securely gripping an object and consisting, at the opposite end of the hinge part, of an operating part for opening and closing the gripping part, the operating part comprising a spring system for reclosing the gripping part after the gripping part has been opened.
To date various sorts of clothes pegs have been known consisting of two halves which are hingeably and detachably connected to each other at the level of a hinge part.
On the one hand, there are clothes pegs which are constructed from two separate parts, namely two parts which are not joined together before the connecting of the two halves of the clothes peg at the level of the hinge part and which, when connected, are held together at the level of the hinge part.
The best known clothes peg comprises in this regard two halves (also referred to as legs) which are hingeably connected to each other at the level of a hinge part with the aid of a biased helical spring, whereby on one end of the hinge part a gripping part is provided for securely gripping an object and which comprises, on the opposite side thereof, an operating part provided for opening and closing the hinge part. By manually operating the operating part, or in other words by bringing the halves of the clothes peg toward each other by means of a (manual) compressive force, the halves are opened, or in other words moved away from each other, at the level of the gripping part. The biased helical spring ensures that the halves reclose at the level of the gripping part after opening thereof.
A drawback of a clothes peg of this type is that the helical spring will corrode and will thus rust over the course of time. If this helical spring is not well galvanized, then this corrosion even occurs very rapidly.
On the other hand, clothes pegs are also known that are made up of one piece, the two halves of the clothes peg being joined together, for example by means of an integrally formed resilient part, even before the connecting of the two halves of the clothes peg at the level of the hinge part.
Various embodiments of clothes pegs of this type are already known. Thus, for example, FR 2 615 873, GB 1 225 812, GB 2 342 117, GB 1 335 650 and WO 97/20979 describe clothes pegs which are made up of one piece and which are detachably joined together at the level of the hinge part. In this regard, the hinge part is embodied in various ways.
All the embodiments have the drawback that, as a result of the embodiment of the hinge part with which the halves are hingeably and detachably connected to each other at the level of this hinge part, these hinges are not sturdy. As a result, there is a real risk that when pressure is exerted on the halves of the clothes peg at the level of the operating part counter to the spring force of the spring system, as a result of which these halves move toward each other in the operating part and as a result of which the gripping part will open, the elements from which the hinging part is constructed move apart and this hinging part accordingly comes loose.
The object of the invention is accordingly to provide a clothes peg consisting of two halves which are provided to be hingeably and detachably connected to each other at the level of a hinge part, the clothes peg consisting, when the halves are hingeably and detachably connected at the level of the hinge part, at one end of the hinge part, of a gripping part for securely gripping an object and consisting, at the opposite end of the hinge part, of an operating part for opening and closing the gripping part, the operating part comprising a spring system for reclosing the gripping part after the gripping part has been opened. Hereby the hinge part is embodied in a sufficiently sturdy manner in such a way that there is little or even no risk of the elements of the hinge part coming loose from each other when a compressive force is exerted on the operating part counter to the spring force of the spring system, in order to move the halves away from each other at the level of the gripping part. This object of the invention is achieved by providing a clothes peg, consisting of two halves which are provided to be hingeably and detachably connected to each other at the level of a hinge part, the clothes peg consisting, when the halves are hingeably and detachably connected at the level of the hinge part, at one end of the hinge part, of a gripping part for securely gripping an object and consisting, at the opposite end of the hinge part, of an operating part for opening and closing the gripping part, the operating part comprising a spring system for reclosing the gripping part after the gripping part has been opened, wherein at least the first of the two halves is provided, at the level of the hinge part, with at least one element having a hook-shaped end which demarcates a cavity, and the second of the halves comprises at least one element which is provided to be at least partially introduced into the cavity, the hook- shaped end and the element provided on the second half being embodied in such a way that the part of the element provided on the second half that is located in the cavity can hinge in this cavity, and the hook-shaped end comprising a first part which extends substantially in the vertical direction of the clothes peg and prevents the part of the element provided on the second half that is introduced into the cavity from being able to leave the cavity as the two halves move apart in the longitudinal direction of the clothes peg.
There is thus provided a clothes peg which consists of two halves which are detachably and hingeably connected to each other at the level of a hinge part, and which can be made up both of one piece and of two separate halves, of which the two halves of the clothes peg are held together at the level of the hinging part by means of a sturdy connection in such a way that when the operating part is gripped shut by means of a compressive force counter to the spring force, the elements of the hinge part remain together, as a result of which there is very little or even no risk of the two halves coming loose from each other at the level of the hinge part. In a preferred embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, at least the first half comprises, at the level of the hinge part, two elements which are arranged next to each other with an intermediate space in the width direction of the clothes peg and are provided with a hook-shaped end, the first parts of each of the hook-shaped ends being directed toward one another when the clothes peg is viewed in the longitudinal direction thereof.
In an advantageous embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, the elements provided on the second half are each embodied as an aforementioned element provided with a hook-shaped end, wherein the first parts of the elements provided on the second half can be introduced into the cavities demarcated by the elements provided on the first half, and vice versa.
Embodying the hinge part as mutually interlocking elements such as are embodied in accordance with the invention, namely which are provided with a first part which extends substantially in the vertical direction of the clothes peg and prevents that when the halves of the clothes peg move apart in the longitudinal direction thereof, and which are also provided to detachably and hingeably engage with one another, provides an even sturdier connection of the halves at the level of the hinge part of the clothes peg.
In a more advantageous embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, the second half of the clothes peg is provided with two elements which are arranged next to each other with an intermediate space in the width direction of the clothes peg and are provided with a hook-shaped end.
If the first, respectively the second half of the clothes peg comprises two elements which are arranged next to each other with an intermediate space in the width direction of the clothes peg and are provided with a hook-shaped end, the hook- shaped ends of these two elements are arranged with respect to one another in such a way that when the clothes peg is viewed in the width direction thereof, in a projection of the hook-shaped ends of these two elements on a vertical plane, the projection of the first part of the hook-shaped end of one element extends at least partially within the projection of the cavity which is demarcated by the hook-shaped end of the other element, and vice versa.
In a particular embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, each of the hook-shaped ends comprises a second part which adjoins the first part and which extends substantially in the longitudinal direction of the clothes peg, and each of the hook-shaped ends comprises a third part which adjoins against the second part and which substantially extends in the vertical direction of the clothes peg.
In a more preferred embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, the second parts are embodied in a rounded-off manner.
This is a very suitable embodiment for obtaining good hingeability of the halves with respect to each other. In a preferred embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, at least one of the halves, preferably both halves, is provided, at the level of the hinge part on the outer side thereof, with a wall which extends in the vertical direction of the clothes peg and is provided so as to prevent that the two halves of the clothes peg could move apart when these two halves move apart in the width direction thereof.
In this regard, this wall can be embodied in a very minimalistic manner in order to ensure that the two halves of the clothes peg could not move apart as they move apart in the width direction of the clothes peg. In a more preferred embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, the wall(s) extend almost up to the underside of the first parts of the hook-shaped ends.
In a particular embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, the intermediate space between the elements, arranged next to each other in the width direction of the clothes peg, is formed as an oblong opening extending obliquely with respect to the axis extending in the longitudinal direction of the clothes peg.
In this way, the two halves of the clothes peg can be hingeably connected to each other by means of a rotary movement.
In a preferred embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, at least one of the halves, preferably both halves, is provided with blocking means to prevent the halves from being able to be displaced with respect to each other in the width direction of the clothes peg when the gripping part is closed. In a more preferred embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, at least one of the halves, preferably both halves, is provided, at the level of the gripping part, with a protrusion which fits into an opening provided on the other half.
In an advantageous embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, the two halves of the clothes peg are identical in their embodiment.
Embodying the two halves in an identical manner provides a very major economic advantage, namely the fact that just one mould has to be manufactured.
In a particular embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, the two halves are separate halves. In a more particular embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, the spring system consists of a folded leaf spring which can be detachably coupled to the two separate parts.
In an even more particular embodiment of a clothes peg according to the invention, each of the two separate halves is provided with a notch into which one end of the leaf spring can be detachably introduced.
The invention further relates to a method for manufacturing a clothes peg which is provided with a plastics material core, this plastics material core comprising one or more cavities extending from the outer surface of the plastics material core to at least partially within this plastics material core, the plastics material core being sheathed with a plastics material layer. The fact that a cavity can extend from the outer surface of the plastics material core to at least partially within this plastics material core thus enables a cavity of this type to also extend from the outer surface of the plastics material core through the entire height of this plastics material core, or in other words from one outer surface of the plastics material core up to the other outer surface.
When sheathing the plastics material core of a clothes peg with a plastics material which is provided with one or more cavities extending from the outer surface of the plastics material core to at least partially within this plastics material core, it is inevitable that plastics material will enter this cavity. In some cavities which are provided in the plastics material core, the plastics material is intended to fill the entire cavity. However, in other of these cavities, it is in no way intended that the plastics material will enter these cavities. In cavities of the type that are not intended to contain plastics material, the cured sheathed plastics material dips; this can surely not be the intention. In addition, it may even be the case that in cavities which are indispensable in the mould for forming specific functional elements of the clothes peg that extend within this cavity, for example specific elements which form part of the hinge part, the plastics material with which the plastics material core is sheathed will also cover these elements, thus rendering in an undesirable manner these elements wholly or partially inoperative.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide a method for manufacturing a clothes peg which is provided with a plastics material core, this plastics material core comprising one or more cavities extending from the outer surface of the plastics material core to at least partially within this plastics material core, the plastics material core being sheathed with a plastics material layer, the plastics material layer which is formed by the sheathing of the plastics material core with a plastics material being present only at these locations in the plastics material core where they should be present, and this plastics material layer containing no bulges or dips.
This object of the invention is achieved by providing a method for manufacturing a clothes peg which is provided with a plastics material core, this plastics material core comprising one or more cavities extending from the outer surface of the plastics material core to at least partially within this plastics material core, the plastics material core being sheathed with a plastics material layer, wherein before the hard plastics material core is sheathed, one or more of the cavities are sealed, at least at the level of the outer surface of the plastics material core, with one or more sealing elements extending within the space demarcated by the respective cavity/cavities into which these sealing elements are introduced, and the outer surface of these sealing elements being positioned in almost the same plane as the outer surface of the plastics material core. This provides a method which ensures that it is possible to opt, when sheathing the plastics material core of the clothes peg, for no plastics material to enter certain of the cavities described hereinbefore. In a particular method according to the invention, the cavities are formed during the injection-moulding of the plastics material core as a consequence of the formation of one or more elements of the clothes peg that extend within the width of the plastics material core and that are provided with one or more bent-over and/or folded-over parts.
In a more particular method according to the invention, the clothes peg consists of two halves which are detachably and hingeably connected to each other at the level of a hinge part, the cavities being formed during the injection-moulding of the plastics material core as a consequence of the formation of one or more elements of the clothes peg that form part of the hinge part.
If the cavity within which the elements extend were not sealed with one or more sealing elements, then these elements would also be sheathed, causing these elements to wholly or partially lose their hinging function. The provision of sealing elements of this type according to the invention prevents these elements from also being sheathed.
In a preferred method according to the invention, the plastics material core is made of a hard plastics material.
In a preferred method according to the invention, the plastics material core is sheathed with a layer of plastics material consisting of slip-resistant material.
In a particular method according to the invention, this method is used for manufacturing a clothes peg according to the invention as described hereinbefore.
This invention will now be explained in greater depth based on the following detailed description of a preferred clothes peg according to the invention, and a method for the manufacture thereof. A preferred embodiment of a clothes peg (1) according to the invention consists of two separate halves (la, lb). These halves (la, lb) are hingeably and detachably connected to each other at the level of a hinge part (2). A gripping part (3), which is provided to secure an object in the closed state thereof, is provided on one side of the hinge part (2). An operating part (4) is provided on the other, opposite side of the hinge part (2). This operating part (4) is provided with a spring system (5) which can be detachably coupled to the operating part (4). This spring system (5) ensures that when a compressive force is exerted on the operating part (4), or in other words when the two halves (la, lb) of the clothes peg (1) are brought toward each other at the level of this operating part (4), as a result of which on the other side the two halves (la, lb) move away from each other at the level of the gripping part (3), and the gripping part (3) opens, the gripping part (3) returns to the original state, namely the state wherein the two halves (la, lb) are pressed against each other at the level of the gripping part (3), and the operating part (4) thus returns to the original open position.
In this preferred embodiment of the clothes peg (1), this spring system (5) consists of a folded leaf spring which can be introduced within a notch (6) provided in the two halves (la, lb).
The spring system (5) can be made of various materials. Thus, for example, the spring system (5) can be made of a metal core which is coated with a plastics material. It is more advantageous to make the spring system (5) entirely from a plastics material which has sufficient flexibility and sufficient resilience. An example of a material of this type is the thermoplastic polymer POM (polyoxymethylene) which has very good resilient properties.
The hinge part (2) is embodied in such a way that at least the first of the two halves (la or lb) is provided with at least one element (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) having a hook-shaped end (8) which demarcates a cavity (9). The second of the halves (lb or la) comprises at least one element (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) which is provided to be at least partially introduced into the cavity (9). In this regard, the hook-shaped end (8) and the cavity (9) are embodied in such a way that the part of the element (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) provided on the second half (lb, la) that is located in the cavity (9) can hinge. In addition, the hook-shaped end (8) is provided with a first part (10a) which extends substantially in the vertical direction (h) of the clothes peg (1) and prevents the part of the element (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) that is attached to the second half (lb, la) and that is introduced into the cavity (9) from being able to move out of the cavity (9), and thus potentially leaving this cavity (9), when the two halves (l a, lb) move apart in the longitudinal direction of the clothes peg (1).
The hinge part (2) can in this case be embodied in various ways. Thus, it is possible to provide one half (la or lb) of the clothes peg (1) with one or more elements (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) having a hook-shaped end (8) as described hereinbefore, each of the hook-shaped ends (8) thus being provided with a first part (10a) which extends substantially in the vertical direction (h) of the clothes peg (1) and prevents the part of the element (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) that is attached to the second half (lb, la) and that is located in the aforementioned cavity (9) from being able to move out of the aforementioned cavity (9), and thus potentially leaving this cavity (9), when the two halves (la, lb) move apart in the longitudinal direction of the clothes peg (1), and to provide the other half (lb or la) with one or more tubular elements (not shown in the figures) which serve as a hinge pin about which the hook-shaped ends (8) can hinge.
Furthermore, it is also possible to provide each half (la, lb) with one or more elements (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) having a hook-shaped end (8), each of these hook-shaped ends (8) being provided with a first part (10a) which extends substantially in the vertical direction (h) of the clothes peg (1) and prevents the part of the element (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) that is located in a respective cavity (9) from being able to move out of the aforementioned cavity (9) when the two halves (la, lb) move apart in the longitudinal direction of the clothes peg (1). These hook-shaped ends (8) also face one another.
These hook-shaped ends (8), which should engage with one another, face one another. These hook-shaped ends (8) are provided, not only with the first part (10a), but also with a second part (10b) extending substantially in the longitudinal direction (1) of the clothes peg (1), and a third part (10c) substantially extending, again, in the vertical direction (h) of the clothes peg (1). The third part (10c) forms the closed end of the hook-shaped end (8), while the first part (10a) forms the open end of the hook- shaped end (8). The hook-shaped ends (8) are in this case embodied in a rounded-off manner.
In the preferred embodiment of the clothes peg (1) according to the invention, each of the two halves (la, lb) are provided with two elements (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) which are arranged next to each other with an intermediate space (11) in the width direction (b) and have a hook-shaped end (8) as described hereinbefore.
The two elements (7a, 7b and 7c, 7d respectively) arranged next to each other of one half (la or lb) are arranged in such a way that the opening of one element (7a or 7c) lies in the direction of the operating part (4), and the opening of the other element (7b or 7d) lies in the direction of the gripping part (3).
The elements (7a, 7b and 7c, 7d respectively), which are attached to one half (la or lb), are arranged with respect to each other in such a way that when the clothes peg (1) is viewed in the width direction thereof, in a projection of the hook-shaped ends (8) of these two elements (7a, 7b and 7c, 7d respectively) on a vertical plane, the projection of the first part (10a) of the hook-shaped end of one element (7a or 7c) extends at least partially within the projection of the cavity (9) which is demarcated by the hook-shaped end (8) of the other element (7b or 7d) and vice versa.
The intermediate space (11) preferably extends obliquely with respect to the axis extending in the longitudinal direction (1) of the clothes peg (1). In this way, the two halves (la, lb) can be connected to each other by means of a rotary movement. This oblique, oblong opening (11) can for example extend at an angle of 45° with respect to the axis extending in the longitudinal direction of the clothes peg.
Each of the halves (la, lb) at the level of the hinge part (2) are provided with a wall (12) which extends in the vertical direction (h) of the clothes peg (1) and is provided in such a way as to prevent the two halves (la, lb) of the clothes peg (1) from being able to move apart when the two halves (la, lb) move apart in the width direction (b) of the clothes peg (la, lb). For this purpose, this wall (12) does not necessarily have to extend over the entire height of one half (la, lb), but can also extend over a part of the height thereof, provided that this wall (12) prevents the halves (la, lb) from being able to move apart when the halves (la, lb) move apart in the width direction (b) of the clothes peg (1).
At least one of the halves (la, lb) of the clothes peg (1), and preferably both halves (la, lb), is provided with blocking means (13) which prevent the halves (la, lb) from being able to be displaced with respect to each other in the width direction (b) of the clothes peg (1) when the gripping part (3) is closed. In this case, at least one of the halves (la, lb), preferably both halves (la, lb), is provided, at the level of the gripping part (3), with a protrusion (13a) which fits into an opening (13b) provided on the other half.
As is the case in the preferred embodiment of the clothes peg (1) according to the invention, the two halves (la, lb) are preferably embodied in an identical manner. In the method according to the invention for manufacturing a clothes peg (1) provided with a plastics material core (14) with one or more cavities (15) extending from the outer surface (14a) of the plastics material core (14) to at least partially within the plastics material core (14), the plastics material core (14) is sheathed with a plastics material layer (16). The cavities (15), which no plastics material may enter during the sheathing of the plastics material core (14), are closed off by one or more sealing elements (17) extending within the space demarcated by the respective cavity/cavities (15) into which these sealing elements (17) are introduced, and the outer surface (17a) of these sealing elements (17) being positioned in almost the same plane as the outer surface of the plastics material core (16). The plastics material layer (16) may in this case be a soft or a hard plastics material, and may in this regard be the same plastics material as the plastics material from which the plastics material core (14) is made, or a different plastics material. Preferably, the plastics material core (14) is made of a hard plastics material and the plastics material layer (16) is made of a slip-resistant material. Slip-resistant material ensures more grip on the clothes peg (1) when pressure is exerted on the operating part (4) of the clothes peg (1) at the end of the gripping part.
In the preferred embodiment of the clothes peg (1) according to the invention, cavities (15), which are sealed with a sealing element (17), are produced during the injection-moulding of the plastics material core (14) in order to form the above- described elements (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) having hook-shaped ends (8). These cavities (15) extend through the entire height of the plastics material core (14). The elements (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) extend within the entire width of the plastics material core (14), and the elements (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) extend within the entire width of this cavity (15), but do protrude in such a way that the two halves (la, lb) of the clothes peg (1) could be hingeably connected to each other. However, cavities (15) of this type can also be produced during the injection-moulding of the plastics material core (14), generally in the formation of functional elements of the clothes peg (1) that are provided with one or more bent-over and/or folded-over parts. These functional elements may not be provided with a layer of plastics material during the sheathing of the plastics material core (14), as this would render the functional elements wholly or partially inoperative.
In the clothes peg (1) according to the invention, still other cavities (18) are provided in the plastics material core (14). However, these cavities (18) may indeed be filled with plastics material during the sheathing of the plastics material core (14).
