Abstract
A dialysis machine includes a control unit (20) having a user interface; a heater (s) located separate from the control unit; a supervisory processor located within the control unit; a delegate control processor located with the heater (s), the delegate control processor in communication with the supervisory processor and configured to receive load cell, heater (s) plate and supply bag temperature sensor inputs; and a sub-delegate heater (s) processor in communication with the control processor and configured to control power to the heater (s). The machine can also include primary and secondary monitoring processors that perform a safety check to the control processing and monitor the load cell.
Claims
1. A dialysis machine (10) comprising: a control unit (20) having a user interface (22, 52, 54); a heater (30) located separate from the control unit (20); a supervisory processor (102) located with the control unit (20); characterized by a delegate control processor (106a) located with the heater (30), the delegate control processor (106a) in communication with the supervisory processor (102) and configured to receive a heater temperature sensor (50a, 50b, 50c) input; and a sub-delegate heater processor (108a) in communication with the delegate control processor (106a) and configured to control power to the heater (30).
2. The dialysis machine (10) of Claim 1, wherein the delegate control processor (106a) and the sub-delegate heater processor (108a) are located on a same printed circuit board (HOa).
3. The dialysis machine (10) of Claims 1 or 2, which includes a load cell (36b) located with the heater (30), the delegate control processor (106a) further configured to receive a signal from the load cell (36b).
4. The dialysis machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, the delegate control processor (106a) galvanically isolated from at least one of the supervisory processor (102) and the sub-delegate heater processor (108a).
5. The dialysis machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, the supervisory processor (102) further configured to control at least one of: a keypad (52) of the user interface (22, 52, 54), a display (54) of the user interface (22, 52, 54) and a valve driver
6. The dialysis machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, which includes a primary monitoring processor (104) in communication with the supervisory processor (102) and with a delegate monitoring processor (106b), the delegate monitoring processor (106b) configured to receive a heater temperature sensor (50a, 50b, 50c) input.
7. The dialysis machine (10) of Claim 6, the heater temperature sensor (50a, 50b, 50c) input being the same as the heater temperature sensor (50a, 50b, 50c) input to the delegate control processor (106a).

The dialysis machine (10) of Claims 6 or 7, the primary monitoring processor (104) configured to cut power to the heater (30) when the heater temperature sensor (50a, 50b, 50c) input to the delegate monitoring processor (106b) is unacceptably different than the heater temperature sensor (50a, 50b, 50c) input to the delegate control processor (106a).

The dialysis machine (10) according to any one of preceding Claims 6 to 8, the delegate control processor (106a) and delegate monitoring processor (106b) each further configured to receive a load cell signal, the primary monitoring processor (104) configured to affect a valve driver (140) when the load cell signal to the delegate monitoring processor (106b) is unacceptably different than the load cell signal to the delegate control processor (106a).
10. The dialysis machine (10) of Claim 9, the load cell signal to the delegate monitoring and control processors (106b, 106a) sent from the same load cell (36b) or from a separate, redundant load cell (36b).
11. The dialysis machine (10) according to any one of preceding Claims 6 to 10, at least one of the supervisory and primary monitoring processors (102, 104) in further communication with a sub-delegate power control processor (108b), the sub-delegate power control processor (108b) receiving an on/off switching signal from the at least one processor (102, 104).
12. The dialysis machine (10) according to any one of preceding Claims 6 to 11, wherein at least one of the delegate control processor (106a), the sub-delegate heater 24
processor (108a), the primary and delegate monitoring processors (104, 106b) and the sub- delegate power control processor (108b) is a low level operating processor.
13. The dialysis machine (10) according to any one of preceding Claims 6 to 12, the primary monitoring processor (104) located with the supervisory processor (102), and the delegate monitoring processor (104) located with the delegate control processor (106a).
14. The dialysis machine (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, which includes a drain container (32) located separate from the control unit (20), the supervisory processor (102) configured to receive a load cell signal from a load cell (36a) located with the drain container (32).
15. A dialysis machine (10) comprising: a control unit (20) having a user interface (22, 52, 54); characterized by a heater unit (30) having a heater/sensor subassembly (130a) and a processor subassembly (130b), the subassemblies (130a, 130b) connected via heater power and signal wires, the processor subassembly (130b) connected to the control unit (20) via data transmission lines and power supply lines only.
16. The dialysis machine (10) of Claim 15, the control unit (20) including a supervisory processor (102) in communication with a user interface processor, the user interface processor operating the user interface (22, 52, 54).
17. The dialysis machine (10) of Claims 15 or 16, which further includes a drain unit (12), the drain unit (12) connected to the control unit (20) via at least one signal line.
18. The dialysis machine (10) according to any one of preceding Claims 15 to 17, the control unit (20) and the heater unit (30) mounted separately from one another.
19. A dialysis machine (10) comprising: a primary control processor (102); a secondary control processor (106a) in communication with the primary control processor (102) and programmed to accept a desired temperature command from the primary control processor (102); 25
a temperature sensor (50a, 50b, 50c, 50d, 50e, 5Of) configured to input an actual temperature input to the secondary control processor (106a); and characterized by a heater processor (108a) programmed to operate a heater (30), the secondary control processor (106a) programmed to send or activate heater commands to the heater processor (108a) upon accepting the desired temperature command if a desired temperature of the desired temperature command is greater than an actual temperature of the actual temperature input.
20. The dialysis machine (10) of Claim 19, the temperature sensor (50a, 50b, 50c, 5Od, 5Oe, 5Of) being one of a heater plate sensor (50a, 50b, 50c) and a dialysate bag sensor (5Od, 5Oe, 50f).
21. The dialysis machine (10) of Claims 19 or 20, which includes at least one different type of sensor (50a, 50b, 50c, 50d, 5Oe, 5Of) inputting to the secondary control processor (106a).
22. A dialysis machine (10) comprising: a valve unit (140); a heater(s)/supply container load cell unit (30); a drain container load cell unit (12); a first cable running from the valve unit (140) to the heater(s)/supply container load cell unit (30); and characterized by a second cable running from the valve unit (140) to the drain container load cell unit (12), the first and second cables each containing less than ten wires.
