Abstract
A body heat reflecting cloth has an aluminized coating heat pressed to a reinforcing scrim. The scrim may be dimpled to enhance the bonding of the coating to the scrim. The scrim strengthens the cloth against tearing, stretching and distortion. The coating provides the radiant barrier. The resulting cloth is thin, lightweight, easily manipulated, thermally efficient, extremely 'quiet' and well suited to hunting or other activities in which the wearer desires to minimize introducing unnatural sounds into the environment. The finished cloth can be perforated to allow the material to breathe or non-perforated to function as a water barrier. It can be used alone or as the heat reflecting barrier layer of a multi-layered cloth. The coating may be applied to both sides of the scrim so that, however the cloth is applied, there will be a heat reflective barrier on the wearer side of the scrim.
Description
BODY HEAT RFLECTING CLOTH
BACKGROUND
The present invention relates to cloth and particularly concerns cloth for use in making clothing intended to protect the wearer from the effects of cold temperatures. Efficiency of performance of outdoor activities is deterred by cold temperatures. Clothing designed for use in cold temperatures often requires the use of materials which may be heavy, bulky or stiff in order to achieve the desired level of thermal insulation. Furthermore, such materials may have other deficiencies in relation to the specific activities of intended use. Clothing worn in strenuous activities will likely require frequent washing. Clothing used in hunting activities is desirably very quiet. For activities involving agility and freedom of motion, flexibility is very important. For almost any activity, it is desirable that the clothing be lightweight on the wearer, compactly foldable for storage and travel and still provide the desired thermal properties to combat the primary body temperature issues. It is also most advantageous if the material from which the clothing is made has the ability to reflect the wearer's body heat back to the wearer.
It is, therefore, an object of the invention to provide a thermal cloth which reflects the wearer's body heat to increase the effectiveness of keeping the wearer warm when wearing the cloth. It also an object of the invention to provide thermal cloth which can be used to make clothing that is quiet when worn. A further object of the invention is to provide a thermal cloth which is used to make clothing that is washable. Another object of the invention is to provide a thermal cloth which is used to make cloth that is lightweight. Still another object of the invention is to provide a thermal cloth which can be used to make clothing that can be stored in a small space and is easy to carry.
SUMMARY
In accordance with the invention, a cloth for use in making thermal clothing is provided which reflects the wearer's body heat back inside the clothing to keep the wearer warm for extended periods, even when the temperature on the outside of the clothing is very cold. The invention is flexible, lightweight, easy to carry, easy to store, quiet when worn, and readily washable and quiet when worn.
In one embodiment, the cloth has a scrim backing and an aluminized coating heat pressed to one side of the scrim. In another embodiment, the cloth has another aluminized coating heat pressed to the other side of the scrim. In either embodiment, it is preferred that the scrim be dimpled.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent upon reading with the following detailed description and upon reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a first piece of cloth in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 ; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a second piece of cloth in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
While the invention will be described in connection with preferred embodiments thereof, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the invention to those embodiments or to the details of the constructions or arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The body heat reflecting cloth is formed by applying a single aluminized coating to the reinforcing scrim. Preferably, the scrim is coated with heated aluminized plastic. This may be accomplished, for example, by pressing the heated aluminized plastic onto the scrim between rollers which apply pressure to the scrim and the coating. The coating material temperature is selected to cause the coating to adhere to the scrim.
The scrim may be, but is not necessarily, dimpled. If the scrim is dimpled, the heated aluminized plastic flows into the dimples in the scrim, enhancing the bonding of the coating to the scrim and also at least partially filling the dimples to provide a smoother reflective finish than the uncoated surface of the scrim. If the scrim is not dimpled and dimpling is desirable, the surface of the pressing rollers can be selected to provide the desired dimpling.
The scrim strengthens the cloth against tearing, stretching and distortion and the coating provides a radiant barrier. This results in a barrier cloth which is not only thin, lightweight, easily manipulated and thermally efficient, but is also extremely "quiet" and well suited to hunting or other activities in which the wearer desires to minimize the possibility of introducing unnatural sounds into the environment.
The finished cloth can be perforated to allow the material to breathe, non-perforated to function as a water barrier. It can be used alone or as the heat reflecting barrier layer of a multi- layered cloth. The coating may be applied to both sides of the scrim so that, however the cloth is applied, there will be a heat reflective barrier on the wearer side of the scrim.
Thus, it is apparent that there has been provided, in accordance with the invention, a cloth for use in making thermal clothing that fully satisfies the objects, aims and advantages set forth above. While the invention has been described in conjunction with specific embodiments thereof, it is evident that many alternatives, modifications and variations will be apparent to those skilled in the art and in light of the foregoing description. Accordingly, it is intended to embrace all such alternatives, modifications and variations as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
