Abstract

A magnetic head whose levitation amount can be accurately controlled when the levitation amount of the magnetic head is controlled by using thermal expansion thereof by a heating element and therefore is capable of stable recording and reproduction of information, and a method of controlling the magnetic head. The magnetic head (50) having a read head (35) and a write head (39) comprises the heating element (40) which makes the magnetic head (50) thermally expand, projecting a portion of the magnetic head opposite to a recording medium, and thereby adjusts the levitation amount of the magnetic head, and a piezoelectric material layer (52) to be used as a monitor when controlling the levitation amount of the magnetic head by detecting the displacement of the magnetic head (50) by the thermal expansion and controlling continuity to the heating element (40).
