Description

"SELF-ADHESIVE LABEL APPLICATOR FOR BOTTLES"
The present descriptive report refers to an invention
patent for a self-adhesive label applicator for bottles, and belongs to the field of
means to apply labels, tags and other self-adhesives. It was developed to apply
the face label (main) and the bottleneck label (secondary) on bottles, both
supplied in the same label web.
Packaging of the bottle type is already known, as
those used to pack beer for example, having a face label (main) adhered to lower
portion of the bottle, and a bottleneck label (secondary) adhered to the
bottleneck. Therefore, the face label is adhered to a large diameter cylindrical
surface and consequently in the vertical position, and the bottleneck label
adhered to a smaller diameter surface, slightly conical and recessed regarding the
surface that receives the face label.
Such layout of labels and of the surfaces that receive
them brings difficulties to the labeling operation. Such difficulties get worse
when one considers the demand for perfect alignment between each other, for
packaging esthetics reasons.
Although the usual means are appropriate to perform
such kind of labeling, studies were earned out to find new solutions, seeking
mainly greater simplicity. The self-adhesive label applicator for bottles, the
object of the present patent, is the result of one of these studies, and comprises,
essentially: an unwinder that carries and unwinds a reel of self adhesive labels,
comprised by a sequence of pairs of face and bottleneck self-adhesive labels; and
by a paper or silicone plastic tape (liner), on which they are adhered in such a
way as to allow the pairs of face and bottleneck labels, transversely aligned on
the web, to be detached: such set comprises also a knife that performs a
longitudinal cut on the web, thus producing two separate webs, one with the face
labels and the other with the bottleneck ones, separate sets of face and bottleneck
label labeling devices, parallel and synchronized; being such face label labeling
device comprised essentially: by a passage roller and a face label web guide; by a
face label web peel plate; and by a passage roller and a guide for the liner tape
without the face labels; and being the bottleneck label labeling device comprised
essentially: by a step synchronization bar; by a passage roller and bottleneck
label web guide; and by a bottleneck label peel plate; and by a passage roller and
a guide for the liner without the bottleneck labels; such system also comprises: a
rewinder for the liner tape without the face and bottleneck labels; and a
supporting structure on which all the system components are mounted and that
can be mounted along the side of a bottle conveyor.
This kind of construction provides an accurate
labeling of the face and bottleneck labels on the bottles, on a perfect vertically aligned position. Such effect is obtained particularly due to the bar that
synchronizes the advance step of the face label and the bottleneck label webs.
Another advantage of the present system is its
relatively simple construction and manufacturing, which turns it very attractive in
comparison to other labeling means.
Another advantage of the present system is its low
acquisition, operation and eventual maintenance costs, which make it also,
regarding this feature, very attractive in comparison to other labeling means.
The attached drawings show the self-adhesive label
labeling system, the object of the present patent, where:
Fig. 1 illustrates a bottle with both labels applied
utilizing the present system;
Fig. 2 illustrates a section of the label web, of the type
applied by the present invention;
Fig. 3 illustrates a plan view of the labeling system
and the use indication; and
Fig. 4 illustrates an elevated view of the labeling
system and the use indication. As can be seen from the figures mentioned above, the
system to bring self-adhesive backed labels into assembled association with
bottles, the object of the present invention patent, has the purpose of applying
pairs of self-adhesive face (main) 1 and bottleneck (secondary) 2 labels on
packaging of the bottle type 10 used to pack liquid products, as for example,
beer, and comprising essentially: a lower cylindrical section 1 1 ; and a narrower
bottleneck 12, a slightly conical truncated section as an extension of the first.
The pairs of face 1 and bottleneck 2 self-adhesive
labels are of the type that comprises essentially (Fig. 2): the respective label
bodies 1, 2, which upper faces contain printed layers that constitute labels 1 ', 2',
and the bottom faces coated with pressure sensitive adhesive 1", 2". Such label
pairs are originally adhered, in such a way they can be peeled, to a supporting
and protective release tape made of paper or silicone plastic tape (liner) 3, on
which a sequence of label pairs 1, 2, are adhered, placed at regular intervals
along the web, in such a way that face labels 1 remain aligned with the respective
bottleneck 2 labels, being such alignment transverse to the release liner. The face
1 and bottleneck 2 labels, in addition to be transversely aligned on the web, keep
between each other the same distance that they will keep when applied to bottle
10; such web with labels 1, 2, comprising the pairs of face 1 and bottleneck 2
labels, adhered to liner 3, is supplied in reel 4.
Therefore, the self-adhesive label labeling system
comprises essentially, the unwider 20 that supports reel 4 that carries the face and bottleneck label web 1-2; the knife set 30, placed ahead of unwinder 20, through
which passes the face and bottleneck label web 1-2 that is cut longitudinally in
the region between the face 1 and bottleneck 2 labels, in order to obtain a web 1 '
85 with face labels separated from web 2' with bottleneck labels; the labeling device
sets 40 and 60, which are separate in construction and synchronized in operation;
the rewinder 80 that rewinds release liner tapes 3', 3" with the labels already
removed and that pulls the later so the entire web may move longitudinally,
passing through the knife sets 30 and labeling devices 40, 60; and the supporting
90 structure 90, on which all the system components are mounted and which is
located alongside conveyor 100 that carries bottles 10 to be labeled.
The face label 40 labeling device comprises
essentially: the passage roller 41 that guides face label web 1 \ placed vertically
and ahead of knife set 30; the blade 42 located on a vertical plane, equipped with
95 a free peeling edge and placed ahead of roller 41, alongside the path of the
external surfaces of lower bottle sections 11 upon which face label web 1 ' is
folded and passes; the vertical labeling roller 43 placed parallel and adjacent to
the peeling edge of blade 42, in such a way that it presses one face label 1 , just
peeled-off from release liner 3' and with its end adhered against lower bottle
100 section 1 1 ; the passage roller 44 that guides face label web 3' already without the
labels, which is placed ahead of peeling edge from blade 42 and before rewinder
80. Roller 41, peeling edge blade 42, labeling roller 43
and roller 44 are mounted on the lower plate of supporting structure 90.
The bottleneck label labeling device 60 is
substantially equal to the face label labeling device 40, placed above this region,
adjacent to conveyor 100, however, it features means to be placed slightly into
the region above conveyor 100 in order to adjust to the path of the external
surfaces of bottlenecks 12 of bottles 10 and means to synchronize the advance
steps of bottleneck label web 2' with the face label web 1 '.
Therefore, the bottleneck label labeling device 60
comprises essentially: an advance step synchronizing oblique bar 61 , placed
ahead of knife set 30 and around which bottleneck label web 2' passes and
displays spiral coils; the passage roller 62 that guides bottleneck label web T and
is located ahead the advance step synchronizing oblique bar 61 ; the blade 63
equipped with free peeling edge, placed ahead of roller 62, adjacent to the path of
the external surfaces of bottlenecks 12 on which bottleneck label web 2' is folded
and passes; the labeling roller 64 parallel and adjacent to the peeling edge of
blade 63, in such a position that presses one bottleneck label 2, just peeled-off
from release liner V and with its end adhered against bottleneck 12; the passage
roller 65 that guides release liner tape 3", already without labels, placed ahead
peeling edge of blade 63 and before rewinder 80; the adjustment device of the
bottleneck label labeling device 60, adjacent to the path of the external surfaces
of bottlenecks 12. 125 The mentioned bottleneck label labeling device 60,
adjacent to the path of the external surfaces of bottlenecks 12 comprises
essentially: the vertical articulation bar 66, which lower end is supported by the
set of bottom plates of supporting structure 90; the first adjustment plate on the
horizontal plane 67, supported in articulated fashion by the upper end of bar 66
130 and that moves angularly on the horizontal plane and in the directions towards
and away from conveyor 100; the second adjustment plate on the vertical plane
68 supported in articulated fashion by a horizontal pivot pin 69 placed on the free
end of the first adjustment plate on the horizontal plane 67; such second
adjustment plate on the vertical plane 68 is capable of moving angularly around
135 the geometrical axis of horizontal pin 69 supports: the advance step
synchronization bar 61 hanging downwards and placed on a region ahead of the
cutting knife set 30; the passage and guiding roller 62 placed above the passage
and guiding roller 41 and ahead of the advance step adjustment bar 61 ; the
peeling blade 63 placed above peeling blade 42 and ahead of passage and guiding
140 roller 62; and the passage and guiding roller 64 of release liner 3" without the
labels, placed above of roller 43 and ahead of peeling blade 63.
The face 1 and bottleneck 2 labels are peeled off by
peeling blades 42, 63 from release liners 3', 3", respectively, and placed one after
the other on the paths, respectively of the lower cylindrical bottle sections 1 1 and
145 of bottlenecks 12, with their self-adhesive surfaces 1" and 2'" facing the mentioned lower cylindrical bottle sections 11 and bottlenecks 12, in order to
adhere to them in the manner known to art.
AU functional elements of the system are mounted on
the supporting structure 90 by means of fastening and adjustment bolts.
150 The labeling device works as described below: The
bottleneck label labeling device 60 is adjusted in such a way so its adjustment
plate on the horizontal plane 67 is fastened in an articulated fashion on the
vertical articulation bar 66 in a direction through which it advances above
conveyor 100, in order to place the peeling blade 63 and the corresponding
155 labeling roller 64 more advanced above conveyor 100 in respect to peeling blade
42 and labeling roller 43 of the lower face label labeling device 40 in such a way
that the mentioned peeling blade 63 and labeling roller 64 are adjacent to the path
of the external surfaces of bottlenecks 12. After that, the second adjustment plate
on the vertical plane 68 is articulated around horizontal pin 69, mounted on the
160 first adjustment plate on the horizontal plane 67, in order to place the peeling
blade 63 and the corresponding labeling roller 64 in an inclined position with
substantially the same inclination of the external surface of bottleneck 12
corresponding to the path of such external surfaces of bottleneck 12. Reel 4 that
carries face and bottleneck labels 1-2 web is mounted on the unwinder 20 and,
165 from the later, initial sections already cut, from such web that compose the initial
sections of face label web 1 ' and bottleneck label web 2\ are guided through the
system in such a way that face label web 1 ' is passed on the passage and guiding roller 41, folded around the peeling edge of blade 42, passed on the passage and
guiding roller 43 and attached to rewinder 80. Bottleneck label web 2' passes
170 around the advance step synchronization bar 61, on passage and guiding roller
62, by the edge of peeling blade 63, on passage and guiding roller 64 and
attached to rewinder 80. Under these conditions, when the system is placed in
operation, the face and bottleneck label web 1-2 is displaced longitudinally, is cut
when passing by knife 30 and forms face label web 1' and bottleneck label 2';
175 the first one passes on passage and guiding roller 41 and peeling blade 42 where
face labels 1 are peeled-off and adhered to the lower bottle sections 1 1 of bottles
10 transported by conveyor 100, and release liner 3', without the labels, follows,
through passage and guiding roller 43 to rewinder 80, and bottleneck label web
2' passes by the advance step synchronization bar 61, on passage and guiding
180 roller 62 and by peeling blade 63 where bottleneck labels 2 are peeled-off from
release liner 3" and adhered to bottlenecks 12 of the bottles that pass transported
by conveyor 100. Liner 3', without the labels, follows, through passage and
guiding roller 65 to rewinder 80. The advance step synchronization bar 61 that
holds a section of bottleneck label web 2' wound in helical fashion, acts to
185 slightly delay the advance of bottleneck label web T in respect to the face label
web T, SO the mentioned face 1 and bottleneck 3 labels of the mentioned web are
adhered according to a vertical alignment on the respective receiving bottle 10.
Therefore, the positions of labels 1 and 2 on the labels
1 -2 web determine the distance between them, as well as their heights on the 190 lower section 11 and bottleneck 12 of receiving bottle 10. Such positions of
labels 1 and 2 on the labels 1-2 web and the adequate adjustments of the present
labeling system, particularly the adjustment of the bottleneck label web 2' around
the advance step synchronization bar 61, determine the position of the labels on
the perimeters of the lower section 11 and bottleneck 12 of bottle 10 and, as a
195 result, the vertical alignment between such labels.
Logically, other adjustments may be made by means
of several adjustment resources of the system until the proper position for face
labels 1 and bottleneck labels 2 is achieved on bottles 10, mainly adjustments in
the position of the advance step synchronization bar 61.
200 Within the basic construction described above, the
labeling system may present changes regarding material, dimensions, building
details and/or configuration, without deviating from the field of the protection
sought for.
