Abstract

In a method and apparatus for locating the position of an eye in three dimensions, an emitter projects light so that it illuminates the eye whose location is to be determined. A bright pupil reflection from the eye travels back and is focused by a lens so that it impinges upon a sensor. Using a beam splitter or other arrangement, the light is cast in such a way that the field of view of the lens is coincident with the light projected by the emitter. In light of a known relationship between the lens and sensor, a unique line is established along which the reflecting eye must lie. If two distinct lines are established, by the same or another camera, a unique location in three dimensions for the eye can be defined. Also, a single line and other known feature of the position of the eye can be combined.
