METHOD FOR REALIZING INTERACTIVE BROADCASTING
SERVICE OF TELEVISION ENVIRONMENT COUPLED TO
HOMEPAGE SERVICE OF INTERNET ENVIRONMENT AND
SYSTEM THEREFOR Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates to a method for the construction of interactive broadcasting service of television environment coupled to homepage service of internet environment.
Background Art
[2] With the rapid progress in the standardization of digital broadcasting, technical developments are in progress in the fields of digital signal transmission via a broadcasting network, data multiplexing, video and audio signal processing, digital television display, etc. Digital broadcasting is believed to replace the existing analog broadcasting in near future. Compared with the analog broadcasting, the digital broadcasting provides various advantages: compact data compression; enhanced transmission speed; and improved audio and video quality. One of the most important advantages is that the digital broadcasting provides interactive services.
[3] The interactive digital broadcasting enables users to participate in voting, which is the first level of the interactive service. Based on the data transmitted through a broadcasting channel, users may choice a particular person or agree to a suggestion. Such a response is transmitted through a return network to a server. This kind of the interactive broadcasting service can be called as a passive interactivity. Users may access only to the information from the broadcasting service provider. In that case, it may be sufficient for the interaction channel to consist of a one-way, narrow-band path from the user to the service provider.
[4] Another type of the interactive broadcasting service is enhanced advertisement. The broadcasting service provider may transmit program data in combination with enhanced advertising data in an embedded form. During the watching of the program, the user may select an enhanced advertising icon to purchase an actor's blouse. The selection may activate tuning to another independent channel. From the channel, the user may obtain detailed information on the item and may make an order of purchase. The order information is transmitted through a return network to a server. The consumer will require to receive notice of the result of the transaction. The acceptance note will be provided from the service provider to the consumer through the return
network. At this point, the interactive broadcasting service requires two-way communications that delivers both the order information and the acceptance note between the user and the service provider.
[5] As further another interactive broadcasting service, the advertisement data is now transmitted through the return network. For example, in response to the selection of the enhanced advertising icon, the advertising data can be delivered to the user through the return network. This type interactive broadcasting service requires two way communications with the requirement for much higher transmission capacity from the service provider to the user. In near future, various services will be provided from this kind of the interactive broadcasting service.
[6] Even though various interactive services are now available throughout the interactive broadcasting service, the information in the internet environment is not well established in such interactive broadcasting service. Homepages in the Internet are constructed for the computer environment where high-resolution monitor and well- advanced input devices such as keyboard and/or mouse are used. According to the prior art, complicated interfaces are being demanded in order to view the homepage of the internet environment through a television environment. Disclosure of Invention Technical Problem
[7] An object of the present invention is to provide a simple and efficient method for the realization of the interactive broadcasting service of television environment coupled to homepage service of the internet environment. According to the present invention, there is provided a method for the effective provision of information contained in a homepage of internet environment through an interactive broadcasting service of television environment, comprising establishing a television upload tab in the homepage of the internet environment, and in response to a request from a user in the television environment, delivering data saved in the television upload tab, via a return network, to the user in the television environment. Technical Solution
[8] In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a method for realizing interactive digital broadcasting service of television environment coupled to homepage service of Internet environment, which comprises the steps of a) establishing a television upload tab as a submenu in a homepage into which various data are contained, b) saving a particular data of the data contained in the homepage into the television upload tab, c) receiving a request for access to the homepage from a user through a return network of an interactive broadcasting service and d) in response to the access request, delivering the data saved into the television
upload tab of the homepage to the user in a television environment via the return network.
[9] In accordance with another preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a system for realizing interactive digital broadcasting service of television environment coupled to homepage service of Internet environment, which comprises a) homepages in an internet environment that each of the homepages comprises at least a television upload tab, b) a website on the internet for managing the homepages, c) a user set top box that delivers a request for access to a particular homepage on the website, based on a homepage channel list, via a return network of an interactive broadcasting service and receives from the website the data saved into the television upload tab of the homepage via the return network; and d) a television set that displays the information transferred from the user set top box.
[10] In accordance with still another preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a system for realizing interactive digital broadcasting service of television environment coupled to homepage service of Internet environment, which is characterized in that, in response to an request for saving a particular data contained in the homepage into the television upload tab from a homepage manager, the website automatically converts the data into a format appropriate for the television environment.
[11] In accordance with yet another preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a system for realizing interactive digital broadcasting service of television environment coupled to homepage service of Internet environment, which further comprises an agent that receives the data saved into the television upload tab of the homepage from the website and converts the data into a format appropriate for the television environment.
Advantageous Effects
[12] The method for realizing interactive digital broadcasting service of television environment coupled to homepage service of Internet environment in accordance with the present invention enables simple and efficient utilization of the data constructed in the homepage service of an internet environment in a television environment. The user simply needs to save the data into the "television upload tab" and no further action is required. The website that manages the homepage needs only to support the "television upload tab" and transmit the data saved into the "television upload tab" in response to the access request received via the return network of an interactive broadcasting service.
[13] And, the user who wants to utilize the data saved into the "television upload tab" needs only to request for access to the homepage corresponding to the "television upload tab" in the television environment and no further action is required. By
registering the homepage with aid of a "homepage address management agent" in a computer environment and downloading it into the television environment, the user can utilize various data created in the internet environment even using a remote control with which limited input is available.
[14] Conclusively, the present invention realizes the incorporation of the complicated homepage service of the Internet environment into the television environment in an easy and simple manner, by newly setting a television upload tab in the homepage. The homepage manager may save various data into the television upload tab to make them available in the television environment. Brief Description of the Drawings

Various data are saved into these tabs (104a to 104f) as separated from one another. The present invention is characterized in that a television upload tab (105) in the homepage (103) is newly established into the homepage (103) and that the data saved into the television upload tab (105) is used for the realization of the interactive broadcasting service of the television environment. Saving of data into the television upload tab (105) is carried out in the internet environment.
[27] Fig. 2 illustrates a specific example of the homepage in Fig. 1. The homepage shown in Fig. 2 is displayed on a computer screen. In addition to a profile tab (104a), a photograph tab (104b), a diary tab (104c), a video tab (104d) and a guestbook tab (104e), the homepage (103) includes a television upload tab (105). As described earlier, the data required for uploading to the television is saved into the television upload tab (105). Saving of the data into the "television upload tab" (105) can be carried out by conventional procedures commonly used in the computer environment. For example, a photograph (1031) in the homepage (103) may be moved to the television upload tab (105) by selecting the photograph (1031) using a left button of the mouse and dragging the photograph (1031) to the television upload tab (105). Alternatively, the photograph (1031) may be copied and pasted into the television upload tab (105). In order to allow users including a visitor or the homepage manager to view the data at the television environment, the homepage manager has only to save a
particular data into the television upload tab (105). Neither the transfer of the data to an external storage nor a complicated user interface is required. In other words, upload of the data to the television upload tab (105) under the control of the homepage manager enables users to view the wanted data saved into the television upload tab (105) through the television environment.
[28] Fig. 3 illustrates another specific example of the homepage of Fig. 1 displayed when the television upload tab (105) in Fig. 2 is selected. As shown in Fig. 3, a photograph (1031), a mobile phone advertising video (1032) and a drama video (1033) are saved into the television upload tab (105). Each of the data (1031 to 1033) saved into the television upload tab (105) has a format appropriate for the computer environment and may be inappropriate for the television environment. Thus, conversion of the data saved into the television upload tab (105) into a format appropriate for the television environment may be further carried out.
[29] Preferably, the conversion of the data into the format appropriate for the television environment is performed by the website (101) that manages the homepage. Preferably, when the manager of the homepage (103) requests for saving a particular data into the television upload tab (105), the website (101) automatically converts the data into a format appropriate for the television environment and then saves it into the television upload tab (105). Alternatively, a data conversion agent (201) which converts the data into a format appropriate for the television environment may be further equipped.
[30] Preferably, the upload of the data to the television upload tab (105) is carried out by the homepage manager or by a particular visitor authorized by the homepage manager, but is not limited thereto. The data saved into the television upload tab (105) can be browsed by the visitors to the homepage (103). Suppose that a visitor wants to view the data saved into the television upload tab (105) through the television environment. For example, the visitor may be one who has received the message "New data has been saved into my television upload tab. Please visit my homepage." from the manager of the homepage (103), a friend of the manager of the homepage (103), or just a visitor interested in the data saved into the television upload tab (105). In a case that the visitor "A" is a user familiar with the internet environment, he/she may access to the homepage (103) through the Internet (400a) using his/her own computer (300b). If he/ she is not familiar with the internet environment, he/she may access to the homepage (103) through a return channel using a set top box (300a) connected to the television. Sometimes, this visitor "A" may receive the message during watching the television. In another case, the data saved into the television upload tab (105) may be optimized for television watching. In these circumstances, the user in the television environment will request an access to the homepage (103) using his/her set top box (300a). Such a
request is delivered from the user set top box (300a) to the website (101) through a return network (400b) of the interactive broadcasting service. In response to the request, the website (101) identifies the requested homepage (103), converts the data saved into the television upload tab (105) of the homepage (103) by itself or with aid of the data conversion agent (201), and transfers the data to the user set top box (300a) via the return network (400b). The user set top box (300a) processes the received data and displays the data on the user screen. The data will be displayed in the television environment as similar to the user interface illustrated in Fig. 3. If the user selects a particular data to be wanted and then the selected data will be further displayed on the user screen. [31] In the television environment, a remote control (300c) is used as input device.
Character input using a remote control (300c) is not an easy task. Although character input using a remote control (300c) is possible and is expected to be improved in near future, the character input using a small number of keys is inconvenient to make an access to homepages. To solve this problem, the system of the present invention further comprises a homepage address management agent (202). Addresses of the homepages which a user is interested in are registered in the internet environment in the homepage address management agent (202). For example, a user may visit a particular homepage (103) in the internet environment using his/her computer (300b) and register the address of the homepage (103) in the homepage address management agent (202) if he/she is interested in the data saved into the television upload tab (105) of the homepage (103). Later, the user can access the homepage address management agent (202) in the television environment using his/her set top box (300a) and receives the address of the homepage at the set top box (300a). Fig. 4 is a user interface that illustrates the specific example of a homepage list displayed on the user screen in the television environment. The homepage list is displayed on the user screen when the "View homepage list" menu bar is selected from the menu bars provided in the television environment. By selecting the wanted homepage from the displayed homepage list, the user can make an access to the corresponding homepage without input of the complicated address and can view the data saved into the television upload tab of the homepage in the television environment.
