Abstract

A service gateway (60) controls devices (111 -113). A service registry (110) registers device services (121 -123). Each device service represents a device (111 -113) connected to the gateway (60) and has a class name and at least one registered property. The registry responds to queries, made by applications (70), to access registered device services (121 -123). A policy enforcement mechanism (115) restricts access of an application (70) to a device service (121 -123) on the basis of policy data (116) which specifies at least one registered property of a device service (121 -123). Properties can include a per-device identifier; device manufacturer; device model name; device feature; device location; device domain. Policy enforcement can use AND/OR combinations of properties. Policy data (116) can be generated remotely from the service gateway (60) and downloaded to the service gateway (60). The service gateway (60) can conform to the OSGi framework.
