発明を実施するための最良の形態
[0017] 以下に、本発明の係る表示装置用照明ランプの実施の形態ついて、図 1から図 9を 参照して詳細に説明する。図 1は、本発明の一実施形態に係る表示装置用照明ラン プを備えた液晶表示装置 1の構造の要部を示した分解斜視図である。図 2は、図 1に 示した表示装置用照明ランプを片側高圧駆動したときの輝度分布を示した図である
[0018] 図 3 (c) , (d)は、ランプ内径が同じ、ランプ電流も同じでガス圧が異なる放電ランプ の駆動時の断面状態を示した図である。尚、従来技術の説明で用いた図 11の液晶 表示装置と同一の構成については同符号を付して説明は省略し、異なる点を中心に 説明する。
[0019] 一般的には、放電ランプは、その構造上、ランプ内径とガス圧が同じでも、図 3 (a) のグラフに示すように、ランプ電流が変われば、面輝度が変わることが知られている。 これは、ランプ電流の大きさが、ランプ内部の発光物質の励起と相関があるためであ り、ランプ電流が増加するにつれて面輝度も増加する。また、図 3 (b)のグラフに示す ように、ランプ電流とランプ内径が同じでも、ガス圧が変われば、面輝度が変わること が知られている。これは、ガス圧が変わると、ランプの中を走る陽光柱 (プラズマ)の太 さが変わることが原因である。
[0020] 例えば、図 3 (c) , (d)のガス圧が異なる放電ランプ 17, 18において、放電ランプ 18 のガス圧の方が放電ランプ 17のガス圧よりも高ぐランプ電流が同じであるとき、駆動 時の図 3 (c)の放電ランプ 17の陽光柱 (プラズマ) 17aが図示されるような太さである 場合、図 3 (d)の放電ランプ 18のプラズマ 18aは図示されるようにプラズマ 17aよりも 細くなる。このため、図 3 (d)の放電ランプ 18においては、プラズマ状態になっていな い不活性部 18bが、図 3 (c)の不活性部 17bと比べて厚くなる。そして、それぞれのプ ラズマ 17a, 18aで発光した紫外線は、図 3 (c)の不活性部 17bよりも図 3 (d)の不活 性部 18bの方が多く吸収し、それぞれの蛍光体 17c, 18cに届く光量に差が発生す ることから、プラズマと放電ランプの内側に塗られた蛍光体は近接するほど明るく光る [0021] これらのことから本発明者は、ランプ電流が低圧駆動側にいくにつれて減少してい つても、それに応じてガス圧を適宜下げていけば、輝度低下を抑えられることに着目 した。つまり、このようなガス圧の異なる複数の放電ランプを直列に接続、それも低圧 駆動側の放電ランプのガス圧を高圧駆動側の放電ランプのガス圧よりも低くなるよう な構成に接続することで、高圧駆動側と低圧駆動側の間の輝度勾配による輝度変化 を抑えることができる。そこで、図 1に示す本発明の実施の形態に係る表示装置用照 明ランプ 7は、図 2にも示されるように直列に接続された複数の放電ランプのうち高圧 駆動される側の放電ランプ内部のガス圧が低圧駆動側の放電ランプ内部のガス圧よ り高くなるように設定されて 、る。
[0022] 図示されるように、 4つの放電ランプ 7a, 7b, 7c, 7dが直列に接続されており、この 場合、それぞれの放電ランプのガス圧は、高圧駆動される側から順に 80torr、 70torr 、 60torr、 50torrと設定されている。尚、このような設定は、例えば低圧駆動側の輝度 の低下が少ないような場合は、 80torr、 70torr、 60torr、 60torr等のように設定すれ ばよぐ常に隣合う放電ランプのガス圧を異ならせる必要はない。輝度の低下が大き くなる部位の放電ランプのガス圧を低くなるように設定するのが好ま 、。
[0023] このように、低圧駆動側に向力つて順次放電ランプのガス圧が低くなるように、複数 の放電ランプを直列に接続することで、図示されるように、近接導体 11への漏れ電流 isによる低圧駆動側の放電ランプのランプ電流の減少、つまり輝度の減少が、低圧 駆動側の放電ランプのガス圧を下げる、つまり輝度の増加によって相殺されることに なる。これにより、表示装置用照明ランプ 7の駆動時に発生する高圧側と低圧側の輝 度差を小さく抑えることができる。尚、図 4 (a) , (b) , (c)は片側高圧駆動する場合の インバータ回路接続の変形例を示している。この場合、図 4 (a) , (b)に示される回路 構成は、低圧駆動側の電位は接地されずにフローテインクされた簡易な回路構成と なっている。。
[0024] 図 5は、両側高圧駆動される場合の表示装置用照明ランプ 8の概略構成を示した 図である。両側高圧駆動の場合は、ほぼ中央が最も低圧になるので、中央の低圧駆 動側に向力つて順次放電ランプのガス圧が低くなるように、この場合 8つの放電ラン プ 8a〜8hが直列に接続されている。この場合、図示されるように左力も順に 80torr、 70torr、 60torr、 50torr、 50torr、 60torr、 70torr、 80torrと設定されている。これに より、表示装置用照明ランプ 8の中央部の輝度の低下を小さく抑えられる。尚、図 6 (a ) , (b)は両側高圧駆動する場合のインバータ回路接続の変形例を示した図である。
[0025] 図 7は図 2に示された表示装置用照明ランプ 7を構成する放電ランプ 7a, 7b, 7c, 7dの配置の変形例を示して 、る。図示されるように直列に接続された複数の放電ラ ンプ 7a, 7b, 7c, 7dが交互に千鳥状になるように配置されている。これにより、非発 光の部分となる各々の放電ランプ間の接続部による輝度ムラや輝度低下を抑制され ている。この場合、図 8に示すように隣り合う表示装置用照明ランプの配置をずらすこ とにより、放電ランプを千鳥状に配置する構成でも良 ヽ。
[0026] 次に、図 9に示すような平面型放電ランプである表示装置用照明ランプ 19について 説明する。これは図 13に示すような従来用いられてきた平面型放電ランプランプ 24 に本発明を適用したものである。この従来用いられきた平面型放電ランプ 24は、図 示されるように内部に千鳥状に配された仕切り板 25a〜25eにより放電路 26が蛇行 状に形成されており、電極 27, 28からいわゆる両側高圧駆動により点灯されるもので ある。しかしながら、この平面型放電ランプ 24においても、上述した近接導体への漏 れ電流によって輝度が低下するため、この場合中央部が低圧側となることから、この 中央部が暗くなるという問題があった。
[0027] これに対し本発明に係る図 9に示す表示装置用照明ランプ 19は、延長された仕切 り板 20a〜20eにより開口部を塞ぎ、そこに電極 21a〜21eをそれぞれ設けることで、 6つの放電ランプ 19a〜 19fを蛇行状に配置させて直列接続させた構成となって 、る 。そして、放電ランプ 19a〜19fのガス圧を左から順に例えば、 80torr、 70torr、 60to rr、 60torr、 70torr、 80torrと設定することで、上述した効果を得て中央部の輝度低 下を小さく抑えることができるようになって 、る。
[0028] 以上説明した本発明に係る表示装置用照明ランプによれば、直列に接続された複 数の放電ランプのうち高圧駆動される側の放電ランプ内部のガス圧が低圧駆動側の 放電ランプ内部のガス圧より高 、と 、う構成なので、低圧駆動側に 、くにつれて生じ る輝度の低下を小さくすることができる。また、直列に接続された複数の放電ランプの 配置も、図 1に示すような直線状や、図 9に示す蛇行状のいずれの場合にも適用でき るものである。
尚、本発明はこうした実施形態に何ら限定されるものではなぐ本発明の要旨を逸 脱しない範囲において、種々なる態様で実施できることは勿論である。例えば、図 10 に示すようなエッジライト方式の表示装置用照明装置 29の光源として、本発明に係る 表示装置用照明ランプを用いても良い。このような表示装置用照明装置 29において は、特に光源 30を覆うカバー状のランプリフレクタ 31の近接導体としての作用が大き い構成であるため、本発明に係る表示装置用照明ランプの作用効果が顕著である。

Claims

請求の範囲
[1] 直列に接続された複数の放電ランプのうち高圧駆動される側の放電ランプ内部の ガス圧が低圧駆動側の放電ランプ内部のガス圧より高いことを特徴とする表示装置 用照明ランプ。
[2] 前記直列に接続された複数の放電ランプの低圧駆動側の電位がフローティングさ れていることを特徴とする請求項 1に記載の表示装置用照明ランプ。
[3] 前記直列に接続された複数の放電ランプの低圧駆動側の電位が接地されているこ とを特徴とする請求項 1に記載の表示装置用照明ランプ。
[4] 前記直列に接続された複数の放電ランプが千鳥状に配置されていることを特徴と する請求項 1から 3のいずれかに記載の表示装置用照明ランプ。
[5] 請求項 1から 4の 、ずれかに記載の表示装置用照明ランプを表示パネルの背面側 に配してなることを特徴とする表示装置用照明装置。
[6] 請求項 5に記載の表示装置用照明装置を備えてなることを特徴とする表示装置。
