Abstract
A surgical device includes an elongated flexible hollow shaft or tube (16), a hollow needle (12) connected to one end of the shaft or tube, and a coupling element (30) at an opposite end of the shaft or tube for operatively connecting the shaft or tube and concomitantly the needle to a source of pressurized carbon dioxide gas (32). The shaft or tube may be insertable through a working channel of a flexible endoscope (34). In a surgical method, the hollow needle is inserted into a hollow internal organ of a patient through a natural body opening. A wireless scanning apparatus (48) is operated externally of the patient to obtain data as to internal structures of the patient on a side of a wall of the organ opposite the body cavity. A distal tip or free end of the needle is passed through the wall of the organ only upon detecting, via the wireless scanning apparatus, an absence of internal organic tissues in contact with the wall. Pressurized CO2 gas is then conveyed through the needle into the patient on the side of the wall opposite the body cavity.
