Abstract

A container (10) having a valve flap (20) which is movable between a closed position, whereat it is seated on the seating area (18) to close an evacuation port (16), and an opened position, whereat it is unseated from the seating area (18) to open the evacuation port (16). A label structure (26) includes a film layer (28) forming a seat platform on which a seating area (18) is located and/or a film layer (30) forming a flap platform on which the valve flap (20) is located. A plurality of label structures (26) can be efficiently and economically mass-produced by a label-manufacturer and then supplied to the container-manufacturer for incorporation into the containers (10).

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received by the International Bureau on 10 Octobrer 2006(10.10.2006)CLAIMS
1. A container (10/110/210) comprising: a wall structure (12/112/212) defining a receptacle (14/114/214); an evacuation port (16/116/216) through which gas can pass from the receptacle (14/114/214) to an outside environment; a seating area (18/118/218); a valve flap (20/120/220) having a movable portion which is movable between a closed position whereat it is seated on the seating area (18/118/218) to close the evacuation port (16/116/216) and an opened position whereat it is unseated from the seating area (18/118/218) to open the evacuation port (16/116/216); and a seating adhesive layer (38/138/238) on the seating area (18/118/218) which holds the valve flap (20/120/220) in the closed position after evacuation of the receptacle (14/114/214); wherein a label structure (26/126/226) attached to the wall structure (12/112/212) includes a film layer (28/128) forming a seat platform on which the seating area (18/118/218) is located and/or a film layer (30/230) forming a flap platform on which the valve flap (20/120/220) is located. wherein a label-to-wall adhesive layer (36) secures the label structure (26) to the exterior surface of the wall structure (12).
2. A container (10) as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the label structure (26) includes both the film layer (28) forming a seat platform on which the seating area (18) is located and the film layer (30) forming a flap platform on which the valve flap (20) is located.
3. A container (10) as set forth in the preceding claim, wherein the film layer (28) forming the seat platform includes an opening (32) aligned with the evacuation port (16) and wherein the film layer (30) forming the flap platform includes a cut (34) that defines the valve flap (20).
4. A container (10) as set forth in either of the two preceding claims, wherein the label structure (26) further comprises: the label-to-wall adhesive layer (36); the seating adhesive (38); and a film-to-film (40) adhesive that secures the film layers (23, 30) together.
5. A container (110) as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the valve flap (120) is formed in the wall structure (112) and wherein the label structure (126) includes the film layer (128) forming a seat platform on which the seating area (118) is located.
6. A container (110) as set forth in the preceding claim, wherein the film layer (128) forming the seat platform includes an opening (132) aligned with the evacuation port (116).
7. A container (110) as set forth in either of the two preceding claims, wherein the label structure (126) further comprises the label-to-wall adhesive (136) and the seating adhesive layer (138).
8. A container (210) as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the seating area (218) is on the wall structure (212) and wherein the label structure (226) includes a film layer (230) forming a flap platform on which the valve flap (220) is located.
9. A container (210) as set forth in the preceding claim, wherein the film layer (230) forming the flap platform includes a cut (234) that defines the valve flap (220).
10. A container (210) as set forth in either of the two preceding claims, wherein the label structure (226) further comprises the label-to-wall adhesive (236).
11. A container (10/110/210) as set forth in any of the claims 1 - 10, wherein the seating adhesive layer (38/138/238) is a resealable adhesive allowing re-opening of the valve flap (20/120/220).
12. A container (10/110/210) as set forth in any of claims 1 - 10, wherein the seating adhesive layer (38/138/238) is a permanent adhesive preventing reopening of the valve flap (20/120/220).
13. A container (10/110/210) as set forth in any of claims 1 - 10, wherein the seating adhesive layer (38/138/238) is a heat-activated adhesive which can be activated to prevent re-opening of the valve flap (20/120/220).
14. A container (10/110/210) as set forth in any of claims 1 - 13, wherein the valve flap (20/120/220) has a single hinge portion.
15. A container (10/110/210) as set forth in any of claims 1 - 13, wherein the valve flap (20/120/220) has two hinge portions.
16. A container (10/110/210) as set forth in any of claims 1 - 13, comprising a plurality of valve flaps (20/120/220) which are each movable between a closed position whereat it is seated on the seating area (18/118/218) to close the evacuation port (16/116/216) and an opened position whereat it is unseated from the seating area (18/118/218) to open the evacuation port (16/116/216).
17. A method of evacuating the container (10/110/210) set forth in any of claims 1 - 16, said method comprising the steps of: removing gas from the receptacle (14/114/214) through the evacuation port (16/116/216) when the valve flap (20/120/220) is in the opened position; and moving the valve flap (20/120/220) to the closed position upon completion of the gas-removing step.

A method of making a plurality of the containers (10/110/210) set forth in any of claims 1 - 16, said method comprising the steps of: making a web (42/142/242) containing a plurality of the label structures (26/126/226); making a plurality of the wall structures (12/112/212); and attaching the label structures (26/126/226) to the wall structure (12/112/212).
19. A method as set forth in the preceding claim, wherein the web (42/142/242) comprises a carrier release liner (44/144/244) to which the label structures (26/126/226) are temporarily attached, and wherein said step of making the web (comprises the steps of:
21 compiling film layer(s) (48,56/148/256) corresponding the film layer(s) (28,30/128/130) onto the carrier release liner (44/144/244); and die-cutting the overall shape of the label structures (26/126/226) from the compiled film layers (48,56/148/256).

A method as set forth in either of the two preceding claims, wherein the web-making step is performed by a label-manufacturer at a first location, wherein the wall-making step is performed by a container-manufacturer at second location, and wherein the attaching step is performed by the container-manufacture at the second location.
21. A label structure (26/126/226) for incorporation into a container (10/110/210) having a wall structure (12/112/212) defining a receptacle
(14/114/214), and an evacuation port (16/116/216) through which gas can pass from the receptacle (14/114/214) to an outside environment; said label structure (26/126/226) comprising: a film layer (28,30/128/230) forming: a seat platform on which a seating area (18/118) for a movable valve flap (20/120) is located, and/or a flap platform on which the valve flap (20/220) is located; a label-to-wall adhesive layer (36/136/236) on the surface of the film layer (28/128/230) which is to be secured to the wall structure (12) of the container (10).
22. A label structure (26) as set forth in claim 21 , wherein the film layer(s) comprise a film layer (28) forming the seat platform on which the seating area (18) is located and a film layer (30) forming the flap platform on which the valve flap (20) is located.
23. A label structure (26/126) as set forth in the preceding claim, further comprising a film-to film adhesive layer (40) for securing the film layers (28,30) together.
24. A label structure (26/126) as set forth in claim 21 , wherein the film layer(s) comprise a film layer (28/128) forming the seat platform on which the
22 seating area (18/118) is located.
25. A label structure (26/126) as set forth in any of the three preceding claims, further comprising a seating adhesive layer (38/138) on the seating area (18/118) to hold the valve flap (20/120) in the closed position; and
26. A label structure (26/226) as set forth in claim 21 , wherein the film layer(s) comprise a film layer (30/230) forming the flap platform on which the valve flap (20/220) is located.
27. A web (42/142/144) comprising a carrier release liner (44/144/244) and a plurality of the label structures (26/126/226) as set forth in any of claims 21 - 22 attached to the carrier release liner (44/144/244).
28. A method of making a plurality of the label structures (26/126/226) set forth in any of claims 21 - 22, said method comprising the steps of: compiling the film layers (28,30/128/230) and the adhesives (36,38,40/136,138/236) on a carrier release liner (44/144/244); and die-cutting the overall shape of the label structures (26/126/226) from the compiled film layers.
29. A container (10/110/210) comprising a wall structure (12/112/212) and a label structure (26/126/226) attached to the wall structure (12/112/212), the label structure (26/126/226) including a film layer (28,128) forming a seat for a valve flap (20/120/220) and/or a film layer (30/230) forming a flap platform on which the valve flap (20/120/220) is located.
