Abstract
A virtual data entry device (100) includes an illuminator (102) generating a planar beam of light (104) and an impingement sensor (110) operating to sense at a location of impingement of a planar beam of light by an object. The impingement sensor includes an optical element (116) arranges to receive light from the planar beam reflected by the object. An optical element has optical power in a first direction (120) such that it focuses light at a focus line location (124), which is a function of the location of the object relative to the optical element and a multi-element detector (130) arranged to receive light passing through the optical element, wherein the distribution of the light detecting by the multi-element detector among multiple elements thereof indicates the location of the object.
