Abstract

The invention relates to a patient turning device comprising, essentially, two members; a first member being a base member with a low-friction surface provided on a central region thereof and the second member being a separate padded section with a low-friction surface on its underside and gripping portions whereby the centrally located second member can be moved over the first member.

Description

Improvements Relating to Patient Turning Devices There is a need in hospitals and elsewhere to be able to turn patients on a bed, particularly where the patient is unable to move himself. This invention aims to provide a device which facilitates the turning of patients. According to the invention there is provided a patient turning device comprising ideally a semi-rigid base member having padded sections secured at the top and bottom and a low-friction surface provided in the central region between the top and bottom sections, and a separate central padded section to fit onto the central region and having a low- friction surface on its underside, the central section being provided with grip portions on at least one side and towards the top and bottom ends. With such a device the patient is normally supported on the padded top, bottom and central sections. When there is a need to turn the patient the central section can be gripped by means of the gripping portions and can then be pulled across the bed with the patient lying on that central section. This is facilitated by virtue of the low friction surfaces on the base member and on the underside of the central section. The gripping portions can then be pulled across the bed, thus rolling the patient onto his side in the middle portion of the bed. Ideally the top and bottom sections will be detachably secured to the base member by Velcro or other suitable structures. The gripping portions ideally are handle loops. The invention may be performed in various ways and a preferred example thereof will now be described, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a base portion of a patient turning device of this invention; Figure 2 is a plan view of the device in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an end view of the section shown in Figure 2. The patient turning device shown in the drawings has a semi-rigid base member 1 with top and bottom padded sections 2 mounted at the ends of the base member. The sections 2 are detachably mounted by means of Velcro strips 3. The exposed central region of the base member 1 has a low friction surface 4. As shown in Figures 2 and 3, a central padded section 5 is provided which fits into the gap between the top. and bottom sections 2. The central section 5 has a low friction surface on its underside, thus in contact with the low friction surface 4 of the base member 1. Webbing is stitched to the central section 5 to form hand grip loops 6. In normal use the top and bottom sections 2 and the central section 5 will be aligned. The patient will lie on top of the device and the device itself will rest upon a normal mattress. When there is a need to turn the patient two loops 6 on one side can be gripped and pulled so that the central section 5 slides over the low friction surface 4 of the base 1. The patient will move with the central section 1 with the head and feet sliding across the top and bottom sections 2. The two handles 6 can then be pulled in a direction across the patient so that the patient rolls over onto his side and into the centre of the bed. The process can be reversed by using the loops 6 on the other side of the central section 5 to turn the patient back and to pull the patient across into the centre of the bed. The padded sections 2 and 5 can be filled with a foam material, for the comfort of the patient. The base member 1 needs to be semi-rigid so that it is flexible but non-compressible so as not to interfere with the slidability of the low friction surfaces over one another.

Claims

1. A patient turning device comprising a base member having padded sections positioned at opposite ends thereof and positioned therebetween a low- friction surface which defines a central region between said padded sections; and a further separate padded section which fits onto the central region, the separate padded section having a low-friction surface on its underside and being provided with grip portions whereby the central padded section can be moved relative to the said base.
2. A patient turning device according to claim 1 wherein said base member is semi-rigid.
3. A patient turning device according to claims 1 or 2 wherein said base member is relatively elongate and said padded sections are provided along the shorter axis at opposite ends of the base member.
4. A patient turning device according to any preceding claim wherein said further separate padded section is provided with grip portions on opposite sides thereof.
5. A patient turning device according to any preceding claim wherein said padded sections are detachably secured to the base member.
6. A patient turning device substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
