Abstract

A pointing device (30) having a puck sub-assembly (50) and a base sub-assembly (40) is disclosed. The puck sub-assembly (50) includes a moveable puck having a user sensor that detects the interaction of a user and the puck. The puck is confined to move within a puck field of motion. The puck sub-assembly (50) includes a support member (52) having an opening therein that determines a boundary for the puck field of motion. The base sub­assembly (40) includes a base surface (45) over which the puck moves, a position detector (45) that measures the position of the puck in the puck field of motion, and an attachment mechanism (46, 212, 221). The attachment mechanism (46, 212, 221) connects the base sub­assembly (40) to the puck sub-assembly (50) such that the puck sub-assembly (50) is easily removed. The base surface (45) is accessible when the puck sub-assembly (50) is separated from the base assembly. The puck sub-assembly (50) can also include a restoring mechanism (13) that returns the puck to a predetermined area.
