Abstract

A multi-mode laser-based bar code symbol reading device (151) having a hand-supportable housing (161 A, 161B). A laser scanning engine (53) operates in either an omni-directional mode or a uni-directional mode. In the omni-directional mode, the laser scanning engine produces an omni-directional laser scanning pattern (500) including multiple laser scanning lines. In the uni-directional mode, the laser scanning engine produces a visible stroboscopically-pulsed omni-directional laser scanning pattern (500) against a single laser scanning line (501).
