Description

AUTOMOTIVE SEAT WITH INTEGRATED THREE-POINT SAFETY BELT METAL FOAM DESIGN DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Area of application This Invention is intended for automotive seats with an integrated three-point safety belt.
Technical problem
The automotive seat is one of key vehicle design considerations. The existing technologies make use of wood, metal and composite materials for automotive seats. In designing a seat the key factor is the weight of the seat relative to the class of the vehicle concerned. State-of-the-art
The chief purpose of a seat is to offer the car passenger a safe and comfortable transport. The design of a seat with an installed three-point safety belt is thus the principal challenge to car manufacturers. The three points are the points of grip between the belt and the body of the seat. The important feature of this design is that all the three points are on the seat, with pertaining mechanisms. The hitherto used solutions were seats manufactured from conventional metal pieces. The support structure of these seats consisted of tooled metal pieces mutually joined by electrode, gas or laser welding. Individual parts were obtained by deep drawing, tooling or laser treatment of metal. This method was mostly used in designing and manufacturing automotive seats. Its disadvantage is the excessive weight of the seats, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, considerable costs of tool making. Besides, the structure needs surface protection. Seats having an integrated three-point safety belt and made of composite materials are a better solution than those produced by means of conventional metal treatment. Their weight is smaller, but their main weakness is the fact that for the time being their mass production is not commercially feasible. The main reason is that the basic materials, Kevlar, graphite fiber and combinations of these are quite expensive. Besides, a part of the process must be carried out manually, which only adds up to major production costs.
Wood-based seats, due to their technical and physical properties, are not suitable for the manufacture of the integrated three-point safety belts. The essence of the Invention The primary goal of the Invention is to improve the technology applied in designing and manufacturing the integrated three-point safety belts.
The secondary goal is to make automotive seats which will be lighter, easier to manufacture, more durable and better than the existing ones. The other goals and advantages of the Invention will be shown in the succeeding description or will be experienced in use.
A seat under this Invention having an integrated three-point safety belt consists of four basic parts. Part one is the backrest, part two is the sitting part, part three is the adapter between the sitting part and the mechanism for moving the seat forward and backward, and the latter is actually part four. The backrest and the sitting part are connected with a mechanism for adjusting the inclination of the backrest. The sitting part is attached to the forward-backward moving mechanism via a rigid adapter or a mechanism for adjusting the height and inclination of sitting. The forward-backward moving mechanism is attached to the body floor panel through the adapter or directly. The innovative feature of this design is that the backrest and the sitting part are made in the light metal and metal alloy foam technology. The method of manufacture allows major savings in the total weight and production price of the seat. In making the backrest and the sitting part, a metal mould is used in which the final appearance is shaped. By inserting the shaped pieces made of light alloys an attractive appearance of surfaces is achieved, i.e., where needed, and, where not needed, an empty space is left. Then precursors and light alloy materials are added, which, when heated, react and turn into foam.
That is how the body of the seat is obtained, one which is lighter and harder than the conventional metal structure, and that is what reduces the total weight of the seat and makes the whole structure more robust. Brief description of drawings
The enclosed drawings are a part of the description of the Invention and they illustrate optimum ways of applying the Invention, as well as help explain the basic principles of the Invention. Fig. 1 view and side view of the seat Fig. 2 spatial sketch of the seat
Fig. 3 cross-section of the seat design Detailed description of the wav of applying the Invention
Figures 1 , 2 and 3 show that the seat consists of four basic parts: the backrest (1), the sitting part (2), the adapter (3) and the longitudinal adjustment mechanism (4). The backrest (1) and the sitting part (2) are linked by the inclination adjustment mechanism (5.5') of the backrest (1). The backrest (1) and the sitting part (2) are made of metal foam. In terms of design, the backrest (1) and the sitting part (2) consist of two parts. One is the foam structure (11-11'), formed from light metal alloy foaming, the other is the jacket (10), the role of which is aesthetic rather than functional. The role of the foam structure (11-11') is to absorb the stress forces occurring in attempted deformation of the seat.
The sitting part (2) is via the adapter (3) attached to the longitudinal adjustment mechanism (4). The three grip points (7, 8, 9) of the safety belt (6) are placed on the upper part of the backrest (1) and on the longitudinal adjustment mechanism (4). The retractor (12) of the safety belt (6) is fixed to the sitting part (2).
The adapter (3) may be of non-adjustable and adjustable height and inclination of sitting.
On the longitudinal adjustment mechanism (4) are the grip points (7, 9) of the safety belt (6). Method of application
An automotive seat with the integrated three-point safety belt, designed and manufactured in the metal foam technology, has potentials of being a lighter, more practical, better and more durable product which can be manufactured economically and which incorporates essential improvements compared with the previous seats of this type.
With minimum modifications made on a seat with the integrated three-point safety belt, it is possible to adapt the seat to any vehicle without departing from the scope and spirit of the Invention.
