Abstract

A disc drive (70) includes a housing (74) surrounding a voice coil (92) in a voice coil cavity (76), and a disc (80) in a disc cavity (78). The disc has data tracks (82) and an outer diameter (84). The disc rotates to induce an airflow along the outer diameter (84). The voice coil actuates an actuator arm (90) in the disc cavity (78) to access the data tracks (82). An air dam (100) is in the disc cavity (78) upstream of the actuator arm (90). The airflow includes a straight line tangent airflow portion (72) along a straight edge (122) of the shroud (122) that is free of obstructions and upstream of the air dam (100). The straight line airflow portion (72) extends from an arc airflow portion (96) around the outer diameter to the voice coil cavity (76) along a straight line path tangent to the outer diameter.
