Abstract

The present invention provides a method of using microorganisms as templates to massively organize nanometer-sized “bricks” into ordered micro-structures, and eventually to functional macro-materials. The method is used to construct nanoparticles into size and shape controllable micrometer-structures using rod or sphere shaped microorganisms as templates. This bio-templating strategy is applicable to contruct micrometer-structures and materials by using magnetic, semiconductive, and noble nanoparticles with or without the help of biological engineering techniques.
