FIG. 2 is a block diagram of a portable data storage device according to another preferred embodiment of the present invention;
FIG. 3 is a flowchart of a data transmitting method using the portable data storage device of FIG. 1 , according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention; and FIG. 4 is a flowchart of a method of creating a ring sound using the portable data storage device of FIG. 1.
Best mode for carrying out the Invention The present invention will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which exemplary embodiments of the invention are shown.
FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a portable data storage device according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. Referring to FIG. 1 , the portable data storage device includes a mobile phone connector 100, a computer connector 1 10, a controller 120, and a memory 130.
The mobile phone connector 100 is fixed into a data port disposed at a mobile phone such that power can be supplied to the portable data storage device from the mobile phone and the portable data storage device can receive data from the mobile phone or output data stored in the memory 130 to the mobile phone. The mobile phone connector 100 has a structure so that it can be fixed into a standard 24-pin port disposed at a mobile phone. The computer connector 1 10 is fixed into a universal serial bus (USB) port disposed at a computer so that power can be supplied to the portable data storage device from the computer and the portable data storage device can receive data from or transmit data to the computer. The controller 120 controls the operation of the portable data storage device.
To this end, the controller 120 includes application programs. The controller 120 detects whether the portable data storage device is connected to the mobile phone via the mobile phone connector 100 or to the computer via the computer connector 1 10. The portable data storage device is selectively connected to the mobile phone or the computer. Therefore, the controller 120 recognizes the type of a device, to which the portable data storage device is connected, i.e., whether the portable data storage device is connected to the mobile phone or the computer, based on via which connector between the mobile phone connector 100 and the computer connector 1 10 the portable data storage device is powered. In a case where the portable data storage device is connected to both the mobile phone and the computer, the controller 120 operates, being powered by the computer.
The controller 120 executes different application programs depending on the type of the device (i.e., the mobile phone or the computer), to which the portable data storage device is connected. In a case where the portable data storage device is connected to the mobile phone, the controller 120 transmits a menu provided by the portable data storage device to a display device disposed on the mobile phone via the mobile phone connector 100 by executing an application program for mobile phones. The menu transmitted from the controller 120 is displayed on the display device of the mobile phone. If a user selects a predetermined function with the use of buttons disposed at the mobile phone, the controller 120 performs the predetermined function. In a case where the portable data storage device is connected to the computer, the controller 120 operates according to almost the same principles that it follows in a case where the portable data storage device is connected to the mobile phone. There are few, if any, differences between the two cases, which are mainly ascribed to differences between the mobile phone and the computer in terms of user interface screens, input means (e.g., buttons for the mobile phone and a keyboard or mouse for the computer), the way a control signal is generated, and specific functions. However, the structure of user interface screens and different principles for generating the control signal depending on the input means are not main concepts of the present invention but are technical features well known to those skilled in the art.
The portable data storage device according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention provides four functions for storing data, transferring data from one device to another, converting data, and transmitting data, which will be described in greater detail in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, the portable data storage device can store data, stored in the memory of the mobile phone, or data, downloaded into the mobile phone via a wireless communication network, in the memory 130 via the mobile phone connector 100 and stores data stored in a memory of the computer in the memory 130 via the computer connector 110. If a user selects a data storage function, the controller 120 stores input thereinto via the mobile phone connector 100 or the computer connector 110 in the memory 130.
Secondly, the portable data storage device can transfer data received from the mobile phone and stored in the memory 130 to the computer using the computer connector 110 or can transfer data received from the computer and stored in the memory 130 to the mobile phone using the mobile phone connector 100. The controller 120 may convert the data stored in the memory 130 into data with a format compatible with the mobile phone or the computer so that the resultant data can be executed by the mobile phone or the computer. For example, an MPEG-based moving image file can be converted into a JPEG-based moving image file, which is compatible with the mobile phone, or an MP3 music file is converted into an MMF music file, which is compatible with the mobile phone.
Thirdly, before storing or transmitting data, the portable data storage device can convert the data so that it is compatible with the mobile phone or the computer. The controller 120 selectively converts the format of data into a format compatible with the mobile phone or the computer according to the user's choice or default setting. It is preferable to set a basic default so that the portable data storage device stores data in the memory 130 or transfers the data from the mobile phone to the computer or vice versa with the format of the data intact. For example, in a case where the user wants to reproduce a music file, which is received from the computer and has one of MP3, WAVE, MIDI, AU, and RA formats, from the memory 130 using the mobile phone, the controller 120 converts the music file into a music file with one of MA1 , MA2, MMF, CMX, and MID formats so that the converted music file is compatible with the mobile phone. Thereafter, the controller 120 transmits the converted music file to the mobile phone.
Another example of the function for converting data stored in the memory 130 so that the data is compatible with the mobile phone or the computer is a function for converting a ring sound file stored in the memory 130 so that the converted ring sound file is compatible with the mobile phone. More specifically, the portable data storage device creates a ring sound file using an MP3 file, which is received from the computer and stored in the memory 130, and transmits the created ring sound file to the mobile phone. For example, if the user selects a ring sound creation function, the controller 120 transmits a list of MP3 files stored in the memory 130 to the mobile phone. Then, the user selects one of the MP3 files. The controller 120 converts the selected MP3 file into an MMF file so that the user can reproduce the MMF file using the mobile phone. Preferably, the controller 120 transmits the time of reproduction of the MMF file to the mobile phone so that the time of reproduction of the MMF file can be displayed on the display device of the mobile phone. If the user selects a predetermined portion of the MMF file, the controller 120 converts the predetermined portion of the MMF file into a ring sound file and transmits the ring sound file. The ring sound file is stored in the memory of the mobile phone.
Finally, once the portable data storage device is connected to the computer, it can transmit specific data received from the mobile phone and stored in the memory 130 to an email address designated by the user or to the computer. For example, if the user selects a function for transmitting a simple text message received from the mobile phone to his/her email address, the controller 120 stores the simple text message in a predetermined area of the memory 130 or in the memory 130 after attaching a predetermined flag to the simple text message. When the portable data storage device is connected to the computer, the controller 120 transmits the simple text message stored in the predetermined area of the memory 130 or stored with the predetermined flag attached thereto to the email address designated by the user or to the computer. The user can create and register a set of email addresses with the portable data storage device. In a case where the specific data stored in the memory 130 is directed to the computer, creating a new folder in the computer and storing the specific data in the new folder can be set as defaults.
In the present embodiment, all the functions of the portable data storage device are enabled by the controller 120. However, the controller 120 can be designed differently so that it only provides functions for detecting whether the portable data storage device is connected to the mobile phone (or the computer) and outputting control commands corresponding to functions selected by the user, such as a data conversion command, a data storage command, and an application program execution command. In this case, the portable data storage device may further include a converter (not shown), which is devoted to the function for converting data into the one compatible with the mobile phone or the computer. FIG. 2 is a block diagram of a portable data storage device according to another preferred embodiment of the present invention. Referring to FIG. 2, the portable data storage device includes a mobile phone connector 200, a computer connector 210, a first controller 220, a first controller 220, a second controller 230, and a memory 240.
The mobile phone connector 200, the computer connector 220, and the memory 240 are the same as their respective counterparts of FIG. 1 , and thus their descriptions will not be repeated here.
The first controller 220 stores data received from a mobile phone in the memory 240 and converts the data stored in the memory 240 into the one compatible with the mobile phone, thereby enabling data transmissions between the portable data storage device and the mobile phone. The second controller 230 stores data received from a computer in the memory 240 and converts the data stored in the memory 240 into the one compatible with the computer, thereby enabling data transmissions between the portable data storage device and the computer. In this regard, it is safe to say that the first and second controllers 220 and 230 provide the same functions as the controller 120 of FIG. 1. However, the first controller 220 serves a function specific to the mobile phone, such as the ring sound creation function, and the second controller 230 serves a function specific to the computer, such as a function for transmitting data to the computer. In the case of the function for transferring data from one external device (e.g., the mobile phone) to another external device (e.g., the computer), the portable data storage device of FIG. 2, unlike the portable data storage device of FIG. 1 , directly transfers the data between the two external devices via the first and second controllers 220 and 230 without storing the data in the memory 240. Since there is a difference in data transmission speed between the mobile phone connector 200 and the computer connector 210, the first and second controllers 220 and 230 control the mobile phone connector 200 and the computer connector 210 so that data can be prevented from being stuck in either the mobile phone connector 200 or the computer connector 210.
FIG. 3 is a flowchart of a data transmitting method using the portable data storage device of FIG. 1 , according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to FIG. 3, in step S300, a user fixes the mobile phone connector 100 disposed at the portable data storage device into a data port of a mobile phone, and the controller 120 recognizes that the portable data storage device is connected to the mobile phone. In step S310, the user selects an automatic data transmission function and data to be stored in the portable data storage device from a menu displayed on a display device of the mobile phone. In step S320, the selected data is input into the portable data storage device from the mobile phone via the mobile phone connector 100 and then stored in a predetermined area of the memory 130 or in the memory 130 with a predetermined flag attached to the selected data. In step S330, if the user fixes the computer connector 110 disposed at the portable data storage device into a USB port of the computer, the controller 120 recognizes that the portable data storage device is connected to the computer. In step S340, the controller 120 confirms whether the data selected in step S310 is stored in the predetermined area of the memory 130 or whether data with the predetermined flag attached thereto exists in the memory 130. If the data selected in step S310 is stored in the predetermined area of the memory 130 or if data with the predetermined flag attached thereto exists in the memory 130, the controller 120 transmits the corresponding data to an email address designated by the user or to a predetermined folder of the computer, to which the portable data storage device is connected, in step S350. If no email address has been designated by the user or if no name for the predetermined folder has been set, the controller 120 requires the user to input a desired email address or folder name.
FIG. 4 is a flowchart of a method of creating a ring sound using the portable data storage device of FIG. 1 , according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to FIG. 4, a user selects a ring sound creation menu in step S400. In step S410, the controller transmits a list of MP3 files stored in the memory 140 to a mobile phone. In step S420, the user selects one MP3 file from the list of MP3 files displayed on a display device of the mobile phone. In step S430, the controller converts the selected MP3 file into an MMF file and reproduces the MMF file using the mobile phone. Preferably, the controller 120 transmits the time of reproduction of the MMF file to the mobile phone so that the time of reproduction of the MMF file can be displayed on the display device. In step S440, the user selects a predetermined section of the MMF file. In step S450, the controller 120 converts the predetermined section of the MMF file into a ring sound file and transmits the ring sound file to the mobile phone. In step 460, the ring sound file transmitted to the mobile phone is stored in a memory of the mobile phone.
While the present invention has been particularly shown and described with reference to exemplary embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those of ordinary skills in the art that various changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the following claims.
Industrial Applicability The portable data storage device according to the present invention and the data converting and transmitting methods using the corresponding portable data storage device, according to the present invention provide a plurality of connectors for different communication manners.
