Abstract

A method is provided for treating a brake-shoe assembly to facilitate separation of a brake shoe from a friction material, i.e. the brake lining, adhesively mounted to the brake shoe so that the brake shoe may be reused. The method comprises the steps of cooling at least a portion of the brake-shoe assembly to a selected temperature, preferably a cryogenic temperature, and maintaining the cooled portion of the assembly at the selected temperature for a time period sufficient to promote separation of the brake shoe from the friction material. In addition to the cooling, a separating force may be applied to the brake-shoe assembly to effect separation of the brake shoe from the friction material.
