Abstract

A gas-focusing flow cytometer cell (10) comprises a liquid sample inlet (23) in fluid communication with a liquid sample channel (12) and at least one focusing gas inlet (21, 22) in fluid communication with a focusing gas channel (11, 13), a convergent focusing zone (15) in fluid communication with said liquid sample channel and said focusing gas channel and narrowing to form an interrogation zone (27) through which sample liquid enveloped by gas flows, wherein said liquid sample channel and said focusing gas channels meet at an angle of less than 90° and wherein at least said focusing zone and said interrogation zone have hydrophobic surfaces. A flow cytometer comprising said gas-focusing cytometer cell or a conventional liquid-focusing cytometer cell comprises a light source, preferably at least one laser diode or LED, and a detector, preferably a semiconductor detector, connected to the flow cellvia fiber optical light paths.
