Abstract

A fuel cell (56) is provided that is suited for mobile and portable applcations. Using an innovative anode (40) with a layer to control the rate of diffusion of fuel to the fuel cell anode (40), fuel crossover through the liquid or solid or electrolyte (76) of the fuel cell (56) is prevented. Electrolyte integrity is preserved, giving a more robust and reliabel fuel cell (56). Further, the innovative anode (40) allows for the use of highly active fuel compositons (58) which otherwise may be chemically oxidized, releasing heat, or give unstable electrical currents. The use of active fuel compositons (58) with the anode (40), as well as a fuel composition and liquid electrolyte (76) in which gaswous side-products dissolve allows for the design of a robust, powerful portable fuel cell (56) which can be used at room temperature with little peripheral equipment.
